PITMAN, NJ -- The New Jersey Athletic Conference honored six Rowan student-athletes in its weekly awards program for the week ending January 29th.
In women's swimming,
Emma Padros was selected the NJAC Swimmer of the Week with teammate
Ella Pennington named the NJAC Rookie of the Week.
The men's indoor track & field team saw
Ahmir Johnson claim the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week with
Luke Gnospelius chosen as the NJAC Rookie of the Week.
In women's indoor track & field,
Amanthy Sosa Caceres captured the NJAC Track Athlete of the Week.
Finally,
Ja'Zere Noel scored the NJAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week award.
Padros notched first-place finishes in the 1000 free (10:56.55) and 200 IM (2:17.43) while Pennington picked up four top spots as the Profs downed TCNJ on Saturday. Pennington was victorious in both the 100 back (58.75) and 200 back (2:07.09) and was part of the winning 200 medley (1:51.64) and 400 free relay (3:40.23) teams as well.
Sosa Caceres turned in the seventh fastest NJAC time in the 400 meters, clocking in at 1:00.62 at this weekend's Columbia Challenge at the NYC Armory.
Johnson picks up the award for the second-consecutive week as the senior broke the school record in the long jump at the Columbia Challenge on Friday. His top mark of 7.38 meters ranks him #1 in Division III.
Gnospelius moved into a tie for the #2 in the NJAC in the pole vault with his 4.40-meter effort at Haverford's McElligott Invite on Saturday. He finished second in the event.
Noel earns NJAC honors for the third time this season as he averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the Profs' 2-0 week, while converting 48.4 percent (16-for-33) from the field. The junior scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds in the 83-65 win over TCNJ and followed that with 17 points and eight rebounds in the 97-66 win at Ramapo. He is currently the tops the NJAC in scoring with his average of 20.6 points. The junior forward is also hitting 51.2 percent from the field and grabbing 7.0 rebounds per game.
This week, the men's and women's indoor track & field teams will compete at the Metropolitan Championships (METS) up at the Ocean Breeze Complex on Friday. Both the men's (4-2) and women's (5-2) swimming teams travel to Merchant Marine on Saturday in the team's final dual meet of the season. The men's basketball team (17-3, 13-0 NJAC), winners of nine in a row and unbeaten in the NJAC, host Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday before Saturday's contest at Kean.
