Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA – The Rowan University baseball team split a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College on Sunday. The Profs dropped the first game, 5-3 and won the second, 10-2.
Rowan has a 3-1 record while Randolph-Macon is 8-4 on the season. In the nightcap, righty
Eric Shugars (so. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) threw a complete game for the win. He (1-0) gave up two earned runs on seven hits. Pitcher Matthew Nickles (1-2) went 3.2 innings and had the loss.
Third baseman
Matt Jolly (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and designated hitter
Frank Rose (fr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) each posted two hits and three RBIs. Rose scored three runs and had one home run. Catcher
Zach Leach (fr. Woolwich Twp., NJ/Kingsway Reg.) registered a triple and three RBIs. Right fielder
Charlie Barebo (so. Emmaus, PA/The Perkiomen School) was two for four at the plate with two runs. Shortstop
Jason Clapper (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored twice and center fielder
Shane Brown (sr. Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) added one RBI and a run.
For the Yellow Jackets, right fielder Cole Migliorini collected one double, one triple, one RBI and one run. Second baseman Jordan Schmeer tallied two hits in three at bats and center fielder Ryan Duphorn scored one run.
Rowan produced three runs in the second inning to go ahead 3-1. With two outs, Leach knocked in all three runs with a triple to left center. Brown hit a triple and crossed the plate on Jolly's ground out in the third. The Profs tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning. Brown walked with the bases loaded and Rose came home. Jolly drove in two runs with a single to right center. Randolph-Macon's last run came in the sixth. First baseman Jay Patti grounded out and Migliorini scored. Rose recorded a three-run homer to left field in the seventh inning.
Right-hander Nick Roth was the winning pitcher in the first contest. In five scoreless relief innings, Roth (2-0) only allowed two hits and he had six strikeouts. Starter
Rob Grilli (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) had the loss (1-1).
Patti led the Yellow Jackets with two hits (three at bats), three RBIs and a home run. Second baseman Jeff Butler contributed with one RBI and one run. Designated hitter Joseph Tuzzolo and shortstop Zach Evans each scored one run.
For the Profs, designated hitter
Monny Strickland (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) totaled three hits (four at bats), two doubles, one RBI and one run. Second baseman
Alex Kokos (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and third baseman
Dillon Mendel (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) had one RBI apiece. Catcher
Steven Hewa (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) added two hits and one run. Right fielder
Michael Decker (so. Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery) scored one run.
In the second inning, Strickland had a RBI double that scored Hewa. Randolph-Macon took the lead with a two-run homer by Patti in the bottom half. Butler had a sacrifice fly in the third and the score was 3-1. The Profs tied the score with two runs in the fourth inning. Mendel plated Strickland with a single up the middle. Strickland got on base with a double down the left field line. Kokos followed with a double and Decker went home. The Yellow Jackets took back the lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Butler walked and later scored on a balk. Patti drove in the final run with a base hit to left field.
