Box Score UNION, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team had a 96-85 triumph at Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Profs improve to 15-8 overall and clinch a berth in the NJAC Championship Tournament with two contests remaining in the regular season. Rowan is 10-6 in the conference and currently in fourth place. The top six teams qualify for the conference playoffs. The Cougars drop to 1-22 with a 1-15 NJAC mark.
The Profs ended the game with 18 three-pointers, tying the program's single-game record. Rowan also hit 18 threes against York College (NY) on February 29, 1996. Guard
Rob DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) and forward Tomas Malmsjö (fr. Malmö, Sweden/Malmö Idrottsgymnasium) scored 16 points apiece. DePersia also dished nine assists and had four steals. Guard
Nick DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) totaled 15 points, five steals and four assists. The five steals tied his season high.
Forward
Shawn Wilson (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) produced 14 points and seven rebounds. Malmsjö and Wilson led the Profs with four three-pointers apiece and seven different players made a shot from beyond the arc. Guard
Josh Borrelli (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tallied 10 points and forward
TJ Booth (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
Kean forward Micah Kerr (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) had a game-high 21 points. Guards Tré Gomez (so. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) and Jodrell Thompson (so. Avenel, NJ/Colonia) registered 14 and 13 points respectively. Forward Michael Summerer (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Kevin Grek (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) handed out seven assists and brought down 10 boards.
Wilson's three-pointer (14:59) tied the score at nine in the first half. A triple by Gomez (10:57) started an 8-3 run and the Cougars led 28-22 (7:52). Guard Justin Watson (so. New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) made a layup and Kean was ahead by three (32-29) with 6:05 on the clock. Rowan ended the period with a 17-4 rally and had a 46-36 advantage at the intermission. Five different players scored in the stretch.
The Profs picked up where they left off to begin the second stanza, scoring 24 of the first 35 points. They were up 70-47 (12:53) for their largest lead of the night.
Rob DePersia led the surge with seven points. The Cougars recovered to embark on a 14-2 run to cut the deficit to 11 (72-61) with 9:42 to play. Thompson had seven points.
Rob DePersia drilled a shot from downtown (5:28) and Rowan had a 21-point cushion (88-67). Borrelli's three (2:55) made the score 96-74 before Kean scored the final 11 points of the game.
The Profs head to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, Feb. 11 for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
