Box Score ASHLAND, VA – The Hobart College men's basketball team held on for an 84-79 win over Rowan University in the opening game of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Tournament on Friday night.
The Statesmen (6-2) advance to the championship against Randolph-Macon College (7-3) on Saturday at 4 p.m. while the Profs (6-5) play Frostburg State University (4-6) in the consolation at 2 p.m. In the other first round contest, Randolph-Macon defeated Frostburg State, 72-60.
Hobart had five players that scored in double figures. Guard Jamal Lucas (jr. New York, NY/Kent School) was the leader with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Colin Dougherty (jr. Lockport, NY/Westminster School/Lockport) followed with 17 points and six boards. Guards Tucker Lescoe (so. Denver, PA/Cocalico) and Dan Masino (fr. Fairport, NY/Fairport) contributed with 15 and 12 points respectively. Masino also grabbed eight rebounds. Forward Matt Walsh (jr. Manheim, PA/Manheim) came off the bench and had 13 points.
For Rowan, guard
Nick DePersia (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) scored a game and season-high 29 points. Guard
DaRon Curry (jr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) totaled 12 points, five assists and five steals.. Forward
TJ Booth (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) registered 15 points and six rebounds. Forward
Ramon Wright (jr. East Orange, NJ/Irvington) added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Statesmen ended the first half with a 17-point lead (48-31). The Profs started the second period with a 16-2 run to cut the deficit to three (50-47) at 15:57. Curry and Wright each produced five points while guard
Rob DePersia (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) hit a three.
Nick DePersia had a basket and Booth made a foul shot.
Rowan trailed by one (53-52) after
Nick DePersia made a layup and free throw (14:53). He then scored with a layup (14:17) and a three-pointer (14:04) to go ahead 57-53. Hobart answered with eight straight points to take back the lead (61-57) with 10:33 remaining. Lescoe, Dougherty, Lucas and Masino all contributed with a basket.
Booth's jumper made the score 61-60 at 9:35. Curry followed with a foul shot (9:16), which tied the score at 61 (9:16). The teams traded baskets and the game was knotted at 63 (8:47). The score was tied at 65 (7:09) after
Nick DePersia's layup.
The Statesman took the lead with a three-point play (68-65) by Lucas with 6:48 on the clock. Lucas hit a three (5:20) and
Nick DePersia also had one (5:09), which kept Hobart on top 73-70. The Profs pulled within one-point (74-73) at 3:34 when
Nick DePersia sank three foul shots. Lescoe nailed a three-pointer (3:04) and the score was 77-73.
Nick DePersia tied the score at 77 (2:23) with a steal and a layup. Hobart led 81-77 after Dougherty's basket (1:29) and Masino's two free throws (1:27). Curry made Rowan's final two points (1:17) and Masino sealed the victory at the line with three of four foul shots.
