Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won two games over Rutgers-Newark, 3-2 and 4-1 on Saturday at FirstEnergy Park.
The Profs are 12-9 overall while the Scarlet Raiders have an 8-13 record. It was the first conference doubleheader of the season for both teams.
Right-hander
Johnny Dunn (sr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) was the winning pitcher in the opener. He (2-2) went six innings, scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs. Righty
Brad Machinski (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) pitched the ninth inning and earned his third save. Pitcher Mike Zibrin (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) had the loss on the mound.
Rowan's three runs came in the fifth inning. First baseman
Steven Todd (sr. Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown) led off with a double down the left field line. He came home on a sac bunt by catcher
Greg Myers (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.). Left fielder
Kyle Golla (jr. Palm Coast, FL/Allentown (NJ)) drove in right fielder
Bret Phillips (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) with a double. Designated hitter
Shawn Leydon (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) reached on an error and Golla scored.
Rutgers-Newark had its two runs in the sixth. Center fielder Anthony Perconte (so. Westfield, NJ/Westfield) recorded a RBI triple to right center. First baseman Ross Halkias (so. Kinnelon NJ/County College of Morris) knocked in Perconte with a single to right field.
Rookie
Eric Shugars (fr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. In 6.2 innings, he (3-0) gave up four hits and one earned run. Right-hander
Corey Feigenbaum (sr. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) recorded the save. Pitcher Ryan MacFarlane (sr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold) took the loss.
Rowan catcher
Steven Hewa (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) was two for three with two RBIs. Third baseman
Matt Jolly (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) contributed with two hits, a double, one RBI and one run. Todd chipped in with one hit, one RBI and one run.
Both teams scored one run in the second inning. Jolly produced a RBI single to right field in the third for a 2-1 advantage. The Profs led 4-1 after the sixth. Jolly crossed the plate on Todd's sacrifice fly and Hewa registered a RBI single to left center.
Next week, Rowan travels to Arcadia University on Tuesday, April 5 for a 3:30 p.m. game.
