Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Montclair State University on Saturday. The Profs won the first game, 9-2 and the Red Hawks took the second, 5-2.
In the opener, right-hander
Sam Nocito (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) was the winning pitcher. In four relief innings, he (2-0) only allowed three hits and no runs. Nocito had four strikeouts. Starter Michael Macchia (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) had the loss. He (4-2) gave up eight hits and nine earned runs.
First baseman
Dillon Mendel (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) contributed with a triple, three RBIs and one run. Third baseman
Matt Jolly (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) was two for four with a double, two RBIs and one run. Center fielder
Bret Phillips (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) added two hits and one RBI. Second baseman
Evan Hughes (sr. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) and right fielder
Kyle Golla (jr. Palm Coast, FL/Allentown (NJ)) each chipped in with one RBI.
For Montclair State, right fielder Ryan Long (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) went two for two with one RBI. Catcher Peter Pena (sr. Lodi, NJ/Colegio Juan Pablo Duarte (D.R.)) was two for four with one double. Left fielder Dom Lampasona (fr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) had one RBI while second baseman John Tedesco (fr. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livington) tallied one run.
Both teams scored one run in the second inning. Rowan recorded eight runs in the third for a 9-1 lead. Left fielder
Eric Oliver (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) drove in Golla with a double to left center field. Jolly singled in Oliver. With the bases loaded, Hughes was hit by a pitch and shortstop
Jason Clapper (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) went home. Mendel blasted a triple to center field that scored three runs. Golla's sac bunt scored Mendel and Phillips had a RBI base hit to center field. The Red Hawks' second run came in the ninth inning.
Right-hander Austin Minton (so. Roebling, NJ/Florence) pitched a complete game for the victory in the nightcap. He (3-2) gave up four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven batters. Left-hander
Conner Walsh (so. Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) had the loss on the mound.
Montclair State has a 14-14 record with a 5-5 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rowan is 15-13 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Designated hitter Matt Long (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) led the Red Hawks with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Third baseman Kevin Alonso (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) was two for three with one run scored. Left fielder Ryan Thieme (jr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) and Kane had one hit and one RBI apiece. Kane scored two runs and Thieme crossed the plate one time.
For Rowan, catcher
Steven Hewa (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and Clapper each registered one RBI. Hughes and Phillips each had one hit and one run.
Clapper produced a RBI double in the first inning to give Rowan a 1-0 lead. Montclair State went ahead with four runs in the second. Center fielder Philip Scott (jr. Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) scored on an error. Kane, Ryan Long and Matt Long all had RBI singles. In the bottom half, Hughes doubled down the left field line and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a ground out by Hewa. The Red Hawks' final run was a RBI single by Matt Long in the fourth inning.
Rowan has a rescheduled home doubleheader against New Jersey City University on Sunday, April 17 at 11:30 a.m.
