Box Score EWING, NJ – The College of New Jersey baseball team won 8-3 over visiting Rowan University on Friday.
The Lions are 21-4 overall with a 6-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference mark. The Profs have a 14-12 record and they are 3-3 in the conference.
Right-hander Eric Teesdale (sr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) was the winning pitcher. He (2-1) scattered six hits in 6.2 innings and gave up three runs, two earned. It was the first loss for rookie
Eric Shugars (fr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca). In five innings, he (4-1) allowed five hits and five runs, only two were earned.
Designated hitter Garen Turner (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with two hits (four at bats), one double, one RBI and one run. Catcher CJ Gearhart (jr. Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) chipped in with two RBIs and second baseman Ben Varone (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had one. First baseman Alex Christian (jr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) added one double, one RBI and one run. Right fielder Patrick Roberts (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) scored two runs and had one RBI.
For Rowan, center fielder
Bret Phillips (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) went two for four with one RBI. Third baseman
Matt Jolly (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had two hits. Catcher
Steven Hewa (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) posted a double and scored one run. Designated hitter
Monny Strickland (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) totaled a double, two RBIs and one run.
TCNJ led 2-0 after the second inning. Christian had a RBI double to left center field and he scored on a base hit by Varone. Rowan went ahead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Strickland knocked in two runs with a double. Phillips posted a single, scoring Strickland.
The Lions were up 5-3 after three runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Third baseman Patrick Anderson (so. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) crossed the plate on an error and Gearhart produced a two RBI single. TCNJ added two runs in the sixth inning. Roberts registered a RBI single and came home on a double by Turner. Center fielder John Rizzi (sr. Millington, NJ/Watchung Hills) scored on an error in the eighth for the Lions' final run.
