Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-2 in 10 innings on Sunday in the home opener.
In the bottom of the 10th, center fielder
Bret Phillips (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) led off with a single. With one out, third baseman
Jason Clapper (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) walked and second baseman
Matt Jolly (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) followed with a walk to load the bases. Right fielder
Nick Gallo (jr. Sewell, NJ/Paul VI) was hit by a pitch and Phillips scored the winning run.
Right-hander
Brad Machinski (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) was the winning pitcher. He (1-0) threw two innings and only allowed one hit. Righty
Steve Priolo (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) was the starter and he went three innings. Right-hander
Rob Grilli (jr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) was on the mound for five innings and gave up one hit. Danny McIntyre (sr. Lakeway, TX/Lake Travis) was the losing pitcher.
The Profs are 1-3 on the season while the Ducks have a 3-4 record. Designated player
Evan Hughes (sr. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Catcher
Greg Myers (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) had two hits in three at bats. Shortstop
Joe Craig (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) chipped in with two hits and one run.
For Stevens, center fielder Jonathan Toro (sr. Sanford, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic) went two for five with one RBI and one run. Shortstop/first baseman Nick Sieber (sr. Boston, MA/St. John's Shrewsbury) had two hits and one RBI while right fielder Garrett Wells (jr. Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) scored one run.
The Ducks led 2-0 after scoring one run in the first and second innings. In the first, Sieber singled to right field, scoring Toro. Wells crossed the plate in the second on Toro's base hit to left field. Rowan tied the score in the fourth inning. With one out, Gallo and Craig produced back-to-back singles. Myers advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Hughes knocked in Gallo and Craig with a single to right field.
