Box Score WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated UMass Boston, 17-7 on Monday evening at Chain of Lakes Stadium.
Shortstop
Jason Clapper (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led the Profs with three hits (four at bats), a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Second baseman
Evan Hughes (sr. Wilmington, DE)/Alexis I. duPont) was four for five at the plate with two RBIs and three runs. Third baseman
Shawn Leydon (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) contributed with three hits, one RBI and two runs.
First baseman
Steven Todd (sr. Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown) chipped in with three hits, a double, two RBIs and one run. Catcher
Greg Myers (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) had two hits and two RBIs. He also scored one run. Center fielder
Shane Brown (jr. Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon Reg.) totaled three hits (five at bats), one RBI and two runs. Right fielder
Nick Gallo (jr. Sewell, NJ/Paul VI) chipped in with two hits, a homer and two runs.
Right-hander
Ian MacQueen (jr. Mantua, NJ/West Deptford) was the winning pitcher. In 3.1 relief innings, he (1-0) gave up two hits and two runs. Righty Bobby Tramondozzi (0-1) had the loss. The Profs improve to 5-5 on the season while the Beacons are 3-4 overall.
For UMass Boston, right fielder Lionel Danielson was two for three with a double and three RBIs. Shortstop Dave Murphy had two hits in four at bats, two RBIs and one run.
The Beacons had a 5-3 lead after three innings. Rowan went ahead 7-5 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Left fielder
Eric Oliver (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) reached on a fielder's choice and Leydon came home. Clapper blasted a three-run homer. In the fifth, Hughes scored on an error with Oliver at bat. UMass Boston trailed 8-7 after two runs in the sixth.
The Profs recorded seven runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. Gallo had a two-run homer in the seventh. Myers drove in one run with a single and Hughes followed with a two RBI base hit. Todd knocked in two runs with a single. In the eighth, pinch hitter
Dillon Mendel (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) singled in one run and Myers had a sacrifice fly.
Rowan plays Framingham State University (MA) on Tuesday, March 15 at 3:45 p.m. The game is at Lake Myrtle Park Field 1 in Auburndale.
