Box Score AUBURNDALE, FL – The SUNY Cortland baseball team held on for a 4-3 win over Rowan University on Saturday evening.
The Red Dragons, the defending NCAA Division III champions, are undefeated with a 9-0 record while the Profs are 4-5 overall. Right-hander Seth Lamando was the winning pitcher. He (2-0) went five innings, scattered seven hits and gave up three runs, two earned. Jeff Cooke pitched four innings for the save. Righty
Andrew Lysy (sr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) took the loss.
Cortland center fielder Conrad Ziemendorf was three for four at the plate with one run. Second baseman Connor Griffin and third baseman Matt Michalski each had two hits. Griffin also scored one run. Designated hitter Steven Figueroa added one hit, one RBI and one run.
For the Profs, catcher
Greg Myers (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) registered two hits, a double and one RBI. Center fielder
Bret Phillips (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) recorded a home run. Second baseman
Evan Hughes (sr. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) and designated hitter
Monny Strickland (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) each scored one run.
Rowan had one run in the fourth inning and Cortland took the lead 4-1 in the bottom half. Myers drove in Strickland with a double. Griffin scored the Red Dragons' first run on a wild pitch. Figueroa had a RBI single and he later crossed the plate on an error. Catcher Justin Teague registered a RBI base hit up the middle.
The Profs trailed 4-3 after two runs in the fifth. Phillips hit a solo shot down the right field line. Hughes came home on a throwing error after he reached base with a single to center field. He went to second on third baseman
Jason Clapper's (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) single and advanced to third on a fielder's choice.
Rowan's next game is on Monday, March 14 against UMass Boston at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, FL.
