Box Score CHESTER, PA – The Rowan University men's basketball team won the championship, 91-87 over host Widener University in the Tip-Off for Autism Awareness on Saturday.
Guard
Rob DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) made four straight foul shots to seal the victory. With 1:11 left, guard Ryan McMahon (fr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had a layup and the Pride led 87-85. Forward
Shawn Wilson (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) tied the score with two points at the line (1:04). DePersia sank two free throws at the 51-second mark and again at 0:18. Widener missed a three-pointer with five seconds on the clock and guard
Nick DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) grabbed the rebound.
The Profs are 2-1 overall and the Pride has a 1-1 record. In the first round on Friday, Rowan defeated Farmingdale State College, 89-87 and Widener rolled over Medgar Evers College, 101-61.
Wilson totaled a career-high 30 points for the second straight game. He was selected the Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-Tournament team by
Rob DePersia.
Rob DePersia collected 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Center/forward
Teirique Robinson (jr. Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) chipped in with 10 points and six boards.
Nick DePersia added nine points and seven rebounds.
Widener had four players in double figures. Guard Sardayah Sambo (so. Middletown, DE/Middletown) produced 22 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Kendall Green (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) followed with 21 points and guard John Fender (jr. Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) had 13. McMahon compiled 12 points, seven boards and six assists.
Rowan trailed by five points (48-43) after the first half. Green's layup at 15:30 increased the lead to eight points (58-50). Wilson pulled the Profs within four (61-57) with a three at 13:59. Robinson cut the deficit to two points (67-65) after a jumper and a foul shot (11:54). He tied the score at 67 with a basket (11:16). Fender's two free throws (10:35) gave Widener a four-point advantage (71-67).
Robinson put Rowan up 72-71 with a layup at 10:06. Widener went back up by seven points (82-75) after Sambo's dunk with 5:32 remaining. The Pride led 84-76 at 4:52 and the Profs answered with seven straight points to pull within one, 84-83 (3:05). Wilson contributed with six of the seven points. Sambo made the first of two foul shots (2:31) to increase the lead (85-83).
