Box Score 2 WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team swept both games of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at William Paterson University on Saturday.
The Profs took the first game, 14-6 and won the nightcap, 14-5. Rowan is now 22-7 overall with an 11-2 conference mark. The Pioneers have an 18-11 record and they are 5-9 in the NJAC. Right-hander
Ryan Easterday (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) threw seven innings for the victory in the opener. He (4-1) gave up four runs, three earned on 11 hits. Righty Corey Martinez (fr. River Edge, NJ/River Dell Reg.) suffered the loss (2-1) in relief.
Outfielder
Ryan Pavlik (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) and shortstop
Evan Hughes (jr. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) both went four-for-six. Pavlik had one RBI and two runs scored while Hughes hit a double and a triple, drove in three and crossed the plate one time. Designated hitter
Casey Grimes (sr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) recorded a three-run home run and scored twice. First baseman
Steven Todd (jr. Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown) hit a double and a homer, knocked in three runs and came home two times. Catcher
Greg Myers (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) smacked a solo home run and tallied two RBIs.
William Paterson first baseman AJ Flores (gr. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) and left fielder Tyler Garguilo (jr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) each went three-for-five with a RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Victor Sanchez (jr. Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) drove in two runs while third baseman K.C. Abel (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and catcher Mike Knauf (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) had one RBI apiece. Abel touched home plate twice and designated hitter Jordan Aughey (jr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Reg.) and Sanchez each scored one time.
The Profs took a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second. The Pioneers got on the board in the fourth and added a trio of runs in the sixth to tie the game. Rowan regained the advantage on Hughes' two-run triple in the seventh and Myers followed with a run-scoring single. After a tally in the eighth, the Profs produced six runs in the ninth. Myers led off with a homer, Grimes hit a three-run shot to center and Todd crushed a two-run jack to left. William Paterson plated two runs in the bottom half to close the scoring.
Lefty
Ryan Sharkey (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Mary) earned the win in game two. He (6-0) went five innings and allowed five runs, four earned on 10 hits with six strikeouts. Right-handed pitcher
Andrew Lysy (jr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) went the final four frames for the save. He surrendered three hits. Right-hander Jon Padilla (jr. Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) was tagged with the loss (0-1).
Third baseman
Kevin McMenamin (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) went three-for-four with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Hughes totaled three hits (four at bats), plated two runs and scored one time. Pavlik registered three RBIs while catcher
Stephen Petriello (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Grimes crossed the plate four times, Todd came home three times and left fielder
Eric Oliver (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) touched the plate twice.
Abel was three-for-four with a double and four runs batted in. Flores knocked in a run and scored one time. Second baseman Rob Eggert (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had three hits (four at bats) and a double and scored twice. Garguilo and Sanchez came home one time apiece.
Rowan recorded five runs in the first, six in the second and two in the third to take a 13-0 lead. Abel singled in Garguilo and Eggert in the bottom of the third. In the fourth, Flores hit a RBI single and Abel had a two-run double down the left field line and the score was 13-5. McMenamin brought home Grimes with a double in the fifth for the final run of the contest.
The Profs travel to Stockton University on Sunday, April 19 to make-up a conference game at 2 p.m.
