Box Score WINTER HAVEN, FL – The 23
rd-ranked Rowan University baseball team fell to the University of Southern Maine, 7-4 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday.
The eighth-ranked Huskies improve to 6-2 while the Profs drop to 3-4. Right-hander Shyler Scates (jr. Jefferson, ME/Erskine Academy) earned the win (2-0). He hurled eight innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits and struck out four. Righty Ryan Browner (jr. Georgetown, MA/Georgetown) recorded the final out for his first save. Right-handed pitcher Andrew Lysy (jr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) suffered the loss (0-1).
Designated hitter Paul McDonough (so. Wells, ME/Wells) went two-for-five with a double, a home run, two runs batted in (RBI) and three scored. Catcher Brendon Joyce (sr. Standish, ME/Gorham) had three hits (five at bats) and two RBIs and scored one time. First baseman Anthony Capuano (fr. Bangor, ME/Bangor), third baseman Matt Bender (so. Walpole, MA/Walpole) and center fielder Nick Bowie (fr. South Paris, ME/Oxford Hills) each drove in a run. Left fielder Tom Zarro (fr. Billerica, MA/Billerica), second baseman Brandon Martins (fr. Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) and Bowie crossed the plate one time apiece.
For Rowan, third baseman Kevin McMenamin (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and shortstop Jason Clapper (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each had two hits (four at bats). Clapper recorded a double and scored twice while McMenamin knocked in a run. Designated hitter Casey Grimes (sr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro), first baseman Steven Todd (jr. Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown) and left fielder Monny Strickland (fr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) had one RBI apiece. Center fielder Nick Kreiger (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and second baseman Mike Ras (jr. Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown) each scored one time.
Southern Maine recorded the first six runs of the contest. McDonough scored an unearned tally in the first. The Huskies added five in the second. Bowie singled in one run, McDonough followed with a RBI double then Joyce drove in two with a single before scoring on a fielder's choice. The Profs got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Clapper came home on an error. Rowan cut the deficit to four (6-2) in the fourth on Strickland's RBI single. The Profs made it a 6-4 game with two runs in the fifth on back-to-back run-scoring singles by McMenamin and Grimes. McDonough tacked on an insurance run with a solo blast in the ninth.
Rowan faces Benedictine University (IL) on Tuesday, March 17 at 9:30 a.m. in Winter Haven, FL.
