Box Score NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men's basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 65-60 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.
The Scarlet Raiders have a 12-4 record and they are 6-3 in the conference. The Profs are 12-3 overall with a 6-3 NJAC mark. Forward David Azoroh (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds. Forward Jordan McDaniel (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Guard Vik Singh (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and forward Allen Kuiper (sr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) each chipped in with eight points. Kuiper also grabbed six rebounds.
For Rowan, guard Kris O'Connor (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) scored 15 points and dished five assists. Forward Ike Robinson (jr. Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic (PA)) followed with 14 points and seven rebounds. Forward Mike Simpson (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) and center Dan Brogan (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) contributed with eight points apiece.
In the final half, Rutgers-Newark led by 10 points two times, with the last one (46-36) at 10:16. Rowan pulled within four points (46-42) after baskets by Robinson (9:43), guard Josh Borrelli (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) (9:16) and Brogan (8:33). McDaniel's two foul shots (6:39) made the score 53-44. Forward TJ Booth (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had a layup (3:22) and the Profs trailed 53-50. Rowan was down by three (62-59) after O'Connor's basket at the 42-second mark. Rutgers-Newark was three of six at the line in the last 37 seconds for the victory.
The Scarlet Raiders started the game with a 7-2 run. Robinson's layup (13:20) cut the deficit to one (7-6). Rutgers-Newark scored 14 straight points to lead by 15 (21-6) with 8:18 remaining. Singh totaled eight of the 14 points. After Azoroh's basket (5:04), the Scarlet Raiders led 27-14. Simpson had a free throw (4:16) and a three-pointer (3:19), which pulled the Profs within seven points (27-20). McDaniel sank two foul shots (1:35) for a nine-point advantage (31-22) at the break.
Next week, Rowan is home against Richard Stockton College on Wednesday, January 21 at 8 p.m.
