Mike Simpson nailed a three-pointer at the four-second mark for the Rowan University men's basketball team in a 76-73 win at Kean University on Saturday afternoon.
In the final half, the Profs trailed 66-59 with 6:16 remaining. Guard
Josh Borrelli (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) hit a three (5:53) and Simpson (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) had a layup (5:32), which cut the deficit to two (66-64). Cougar guard Emmanuel Omowole (sr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) made two foul shots (4:53) to lead 68-64. Guard
Kris O'Connor (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) pulled Rowan within one point (68-67) after a three-pointer at 4:41.
Kean was ahead 70-67 (3:47) with a basket by guard Tommy Soulias (jr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood). O'Connor tied the score at 70 (3:32) with a three and he hit a second one (2:50) for a three-point advantage (73-70). Soulias' three-pointer tied the score, 73-73. Simpson drained the winning basket with an assist from O'Connor. Kean missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Simpson finished the game with a season-high 24 points and seven rebounds. O'Connor contributed with 17 points, six boards and nine assists. Forward
Daniel Waynick (sr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) chipped in with 12 points. Borrelli and center
Dan Brogan (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) added eight and seven points respectively.
Rowan has a 12-1 record with a 6-1 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Profs have a nine-game win streak. Kean is 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
Soulias scored a game-high 30 points. Guard J.J. Hladik (sr. Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) produced 12 points and Omowole had 10. Omowole also collected five assists and four steals.
There were five lead changes and four ties in the first half. The last tie was at 40 (2:06) after a layup and foul shot by Simpson. Soulias' free throw (0:26) put the Cougars ahead by one (41-40) at the break. He was the top scorer in the period with 20 points while Simpson registered 16.
Next week, Rowan is home against William Paterson University on Wednesday, January 14 at 6 p.m.
