Box Score BETHLEHEM, PA – The #22 Moravian College baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat #6 Rowan University, 3-2 in the regular season finale for both teams on Friday afternoon.
First baseman Charles Savite (so. Hackettstown, NJ/West Morris C.) started the ninth with a single and third baseman Ryan Luke (jr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) sacrificed him to second. A base hit by center fielder Joseph Connell (sr. Bethleham, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) put runners on first and third. Savite then crossed the plate on a passed ball to tie the game. Designated hitter Joey DiSarno (jr. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) followed with a single that scored Connell for the winning run.
The Profs and the Hounds each have a record of 32-10. Rowan and Moravian are ranked one and two respectively in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region rankings that were released on Thursday, May 8. Rowan earned the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The selections will be released early Monday morning with the regionals beginning on Wednesday, May 14.
Right-handed pitcher Chris Soltys (sr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) earned the victory. He (6-1) threw two innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit. Righty Brad Machinski (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) suffered the loss in relief. He (1-3) pitched three innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
Left fielder Anthony Gaetaniello (fr. Nazareth, PA/Nazarerth) went two for four with one run scored. Right fielder Matt Hanson (jr. Doylestown, PA/Central Buck W.) registered one hit and one RBI.
For Rowan, second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had two hits in four at bats and one RBI. Shortstop Ryan Williams (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) scored one run apiece. Designated hitter Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) drove in one run.
Rowan scored twice in the first on a RBI single by Benak that scored Pavlik and a run scoring fielder's choice by Grimes that plated Williams. Moravian tallied a run in the bottom of the inning when Hanson drove in Gaetaniello with a single.
