Box Score 2 Highlight Video 1 Highlight Video 2GLASSBORO, NJ – The #11/14 Rowan University baseball team split its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon. The Red Hawks took game one, 6-3 in 12 innings and the Profs won the nightcap, 4-3.
In the top of the 12
th inning, Montclair State scored three times. Second baseman Lou Martini (sr. Flemington, NJ/North Hunterdon) hit a bunt single to score right fielder Ryan Long (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.). First baseman Christopher Reynolds (jr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) smacked a RBI double to left and left fielder P.J. Jennings (sr. Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) had a RBI single.
Long was three for five with three runs scored. Martini had three hits (six at bats) with a RBI and scored twice. Reynolds recorded three hits in five at bats, had a double, drove in three runs and scored once. Jennings had two hits and two RBIs.
Right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) went three for six with a run scored. Designated hitter Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) produced three hits in four at bats and drove in a run. Center fielder Eric Perez (sr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) had two hits.
Left-handed pitcher John Silvestri (sr. Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) earned the victory in relief. Silvestri (3-2) threw two scoreless innings. Righty Carlos Ruiz (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) suffered the loss. Ruiz (1-1) pitched one inning out of the bullpen and allowed two runs on one hit.
Rowan jumped out in front 3-0 in the third inning after three consecutive RBI singles by second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield), Grimes and third baseman Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple). In the fourth, Montclair State got on the board with a run scoring base hit by Jennings. The Red Hawks tied the game in the sixth on a two-run double by Reynolds.
In the second game, the Profs pushed across the winning run on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) in the bottom of the seventh. McMenamin had singled, catcher Stephen Petriello (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) was hit by a pitch and Perez hit a single to load the bases.
Rowan has an overall record of 23-7 and a conference mark of 10-4. Montclair State is 15-14 overall with a 9-5 record in the NJAC.
Montclair State had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI groundout by designated hitter Nick Martins (sr. Linden, NJ/Linden). Rowan tied the game in the bottom half with a run scoring single by Powelson. Martini put the Red Hawks ahead 3-1 with a two-run double in the third inning. Perez's run scoring double in the fourth made it 3-2. Rowan tied the game in the fifth when McMenamin hit into a double play, which scored Benak.
Petriello recorded two doubles and scored one run. Powelson had one hit and drove in two runs. Perez tallied two hits (four at bats) and one RBI.
Center fielder Philip Scott (fr. Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro), shortstop Cody Pace (sr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) and Reynolds each had two hits. Pace and Reynolds scored one run apiece.
Left-hander Ryan Sharkey (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Mary) was the winning the pitcher. Sharkey
(4-0) threw seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Ruiz recorded his fourth save, pitching a perfect ninth inning. Right-handed pitcher Louis Pimpinella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) took the loss. Pimpinella (1-1) pitched four innings of relief and gave up one run on five hits.
