Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – The #11/14 Rowan University baseball team defeated New Jersey City University, 5-1 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday afternoon.
Right-handed pitcher Dylan Johannink (jr. Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) threw eight scoreless innings to earn the victory. Johannink (4-0) struck out 13 batters and scattered four hits. Lefty Delio Coutinho (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) suffered the loss. Coutinho (3-2) gave up four runs on seven hits and had six strikeouts. Rowan has an overall record of 22-6 and a conference mark of 9-3. NJCU is 9-17 overall with a 3-9 record in the NJAC.
Right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) was three for three with a RBI. Second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had two hits in five at bats, one triple and scored a run. First baseman Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) recorded two hits, one home run, drove in three runs and scored twice.
NJCU catcher Andrew Niech (so. Avenel, NJ/Colonia) produced two hits (four at bats), one double and scored one run. Pinch hitter Matthew Wagner (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) knocked in one run.
Rowan plated four runs in the top of the sixth. Designated hitter Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) drove in Benak on a groundout. Powelson then hit a three-run homer to left field. The Profs added the fifth run in the eighth on a RBI single by Pavlik. NJCU scored its run in the ninth when Wagner hit into a fielder's choice that scored Niech.
Rowan hosts Montclair State University on Saturday, April 19 for a doubleheader at 11:30 a.m.
