Box Score READING, PA – The Rowan University baseball team won 10-7 at Alvernia University on Sunday afternoon.
Right-hander Matt Nelson (jr. Allentown, PA/Parkland) was the winning pitcher. He (2-1) went 5.1 innings and gave up four runs, three earned on seven hits. Carlos Ruiz (sr. South Plainfield NJ/South Plainfield) threw the last two innings and earned his third save. Righty Matt Osgoodby (so. Manasquan, NJ/Wall) had the loss. He (1-1) allowed five hits and six runs, two earned in 3.2 innings.
The Profs are 19-7 overall while the Crusaders have a 20-7 record. Second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) contributed with two hits (six at bats), a double, four RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Ryan Williams (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) was four for six with one RBI. Right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) chipped in with two hits, a double and three runs scored.
Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) had three hits in five at bats and two RBIs. First baseman Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro), left fielder Nick Kreiger (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and Williams each scored two runs. Designated hitter Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) added one RBI.
For Alvernia, right fielder Chris Gehris (sr. Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) and third baseman Jason Clapper (fr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) both produced two hits and two runs scored. Clapper also knocked in one run. Catcher Chris Burns (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Holy Cross) registered two hits, one double, three RBIs and one run scored. Designated hitter Santino Alteri (so. Watertown, NY/Immaculate Heart Central), second baseman Brok Martin (jr. Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) and left fielder Ben Sawyer (jr. Matawan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) all had one hit and one RBI.
The Profs led 2-0 after Benak singled in a run and Powelson walked with the bases loaded in the first inning. Clapper's RBI single in the second made the score 2-1. Rowan was ahead 6-1 with four runs in the fourth inning. Kreiger crossed the plate on an error and Pavlik came home on a ground out by Benak. McMenamin drove in Williams with a single to right field and Grimes scored on a passed ball. In the bottom half, Sawyer tallied a sacrifice fly and Gehris scored because of an error.
Rowan was ahead 7-3 after Williams' RBI single in the fifth. Burns doubled in a run for Alvernia in the sixth. Benak recorded a two-RBI double in the seventh for a 9-4 lead. In the eighth, the Crusaders tallied three runs and trailed 9-7. Burns scored Clapper with a base hit to left field. Alteri had a RBI with a bases loaded walk. Martin's single through the left side scored Burns. McMenamin produced a RBI single in the ninth for the last run.
