Penn State Abington Baseball Defeats #10 Rowan, 4-3

Box Score JENKINTOWN, PA – The Penn State Abington baseball team scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat #10 Rowan University, 4-3 on Monday afternoon.
 
With two outs in the ninth, Penn State Abington got two runners on base with a walk and an infield hit. Catcher Tom Ditro (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) then hit a single to right field that knocked in the winning run as second baseman Callan Palmer (so. Lower Moreland, PA/Lower Moreland) scored.
 
Penn State Abington has an overall record of 6-6 and Rowan's mark is 10-3. Right-handed pitcher Kevin Faber (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) earned the victory, throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Faber (3-0) gave up one hit. Righty Tyler Bayley (jr. Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) suffered the loss. Bayley (0-1) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits.
 
Ditro went two for five with a run scored and one RBI. Left fielder A.J. Vagliani (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) had two hits in three at bats with a double and scored a run. Third baseman Diego Melendez (fr. Camden, NJ/Pennsauken) and designated hitter Fran Caruso (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill College) had one RBI apiece.
 
First baseman Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) produced four hits (five at bats) for the Profs. Shortstop Ryan Williams (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca), third baseman Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and designated hitter Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) each collected two hits. Williams scored twice and Grimes knocked in a run.
 
Rowan took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI single by Grimes. Left fielder Eric Sellitto (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) then scored an unearned run on catcher McCabe Reim's (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) sac bunt in the fourth for a 2-0 advantage. Penn State Abington took the lead with a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Melendez and Caruso each hit a RBI groundout and first baseman Mike Scaringelli (fr. Bordentown, NJ/Notre Dame) scored on a wild pitch. The Profs tied the game in the seventh when Williams crossed the plate on an error.
 
Rowan travels to face Haverford College on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. first-pitch.
