Baseball Defeats Ripon, 8-2

Box Score WINTER HAVEN, FL – The #10 Rowan University baseball team defeated Ripon College (WI), 8-2 on Thursday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
 
Rowan has an overall record of 8-2 and Ripon has a mark of 1-7. Right-hander Rob Grilli (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) earned the victory. Grilli (1-0) threw five innings of four-hit ball recording three strikeouts. Righty Tyler Bayley (jr. Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) picked up his second save, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up two hits. Right-handed pitcher Tom Fish (0-2) suffered the loss.
 
Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) went five for five with a double, three runs scored and one RBI for Rowan. Center fielder Eric Perez (sr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) hit a triple, scored three runs and knocked one in. Shortstop Ryan Williams (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and first baseman Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) each had two hits. Powelson also recorded a RBI. Left fielder Scott Bruno (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) collected a double and two RBIs.
 
Ripon third baseman Michael Polcyn had three hits in four at bats. Right fielder Tom Sawyer tallied two RBIs. Center fielder Dakotah Kirchenwitz went two for three.
 
Rowan scored the first five runs of the game. Second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) hit a RBI double in the first. In the third, Perez smacked a RBI triple and Powelson had a run scoring single. Bruno recorded a two-run double in the fifth. Sawyer made the score 5-2 with a single that plated two runs in the eighth. The Profs scored three more times in the ninth. McMenamin had a RBI single and later scored on an error, while Perez crossed the plate on an error.
 
Rowan will play #3 University of Southern Maine on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Winter Haven, FL.
