Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA – The Rowan University baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Randolph-Macon College on Sunday afternoon. The Profs won game one 6-4 and the second 7-1.
On Saturday, the Profs had a 5-2 victory against the Yellow Jackets. Rowan has a 3-0 record, while Randolph-Macon has a 2-5 mark.
In the first game, reliever Richie Suarez (so. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) threw 0.1 innings to earn the victory. Right-hander Johnny Dunn (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) was on the mound in the ninth for the last out and recorded the save. Pitcher Matt Fischgrund (sr. Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) took the loss. Fischgrund went 5.2 innings and gave up nine hits and four earned runs.
Second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) recorded two doubles in three at bats, one run scored and a RBI. First baseman Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) went two for four and scored one run. Catcher Connor Grant (sr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) had two hits, a double and a triple (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. For the Yellow Jackets, third baseman Nate Meiners (jr. Silver Spring, MD/St. John's Prep) had three hits in three at bats, one RBI and one run scored.
Rowan scored three times in the first inning. Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) knocked in Benak with a sacrifice fly. Grimes scored on an error and Grant had a RBI double, scoring designated hitter Eric Sellitto (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee).
Randolph-Macon got on the scoreboard with one run in the third. Center fielder Eric Perez (sr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) extended the Profs' lead to 4-1 with a solo homer in the fourth. Meiners trimmed the deficit to 4-2 with a RBI single in the bottom half. In the sixth, Perez's sacrifice fly to left scored Grant. Benak's RBI walk made the score 6-2. The Yellow Jackets' last two runs came in the seventh.
Right-hander Ryan Easterday (jr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) earned the victory in the nightcap. He (1-0) pitched six innings and only allowed one run on two hits. He had four strikeouts. Righty Brad Machinski (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) threw three innings for the save. He did not give up a hit or a run while striking out three batters. Lefty James Walsh (so. Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) was the losing pitcher. In six innings, he allowed four hits and three earned runs.
Sellitto led the Profs with two hits (five at bats), three RBIs and a home run. Grimes was two for four at the plate with a home run and two runs scored. Grant chipped in with two hits in four at bats. First baseman Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) contributed with a solo homer.
Second baseman Jordan Schmeer (fr. Richmond, VA/Benedictine) put Randolph-Macon ahead 1-0 with a home run in the first inning. Sellitto smacked a two run shot in the fourth and Rowan took the lead 2-1. Grimes' home run made the score 3-1 in the sixth inning. Right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) hit a RBI single to center field in the seventh for a 4-1 advantage.
In the ninth, Powelson's homer made the score 5-1. Benak had a RBI double and Sellitto singled in a run for the final score.
Rowan will play its home opener against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
