Women's Lacrosse Falls At Gettysburg, 17-5 In NCAA First Round Game

GETTYSBURG, PA – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team lost to Gettysburg College, 17-5 in the first round the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday.

Gettysburg (19-1) plays Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (15-3) in the regional on Saturday, May 11.  The region finals are scheduled for Sunday, May 12.  The national semifinals and championship will be played on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19 at Stevenson University’s Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills, MD.

The Bullets are riding a 12-game win streak.  Attack Kelsey Markiewicz led the way with four goals and one assist.  Midfielder Maggie Connolly chipped in with two goals and two assists.  Attacks Loren Pruitt and Mandy Buell each chipped in with two  goals.  Attack Lindsey Robinson added one goal and two assists while attacks Sam Aiello and Katie Blumenthal had one goal and one assist apiece.  Attacks Bridget Kenny, Bailey Beardsley and Abby Baigelman and midfielder Liz Cocchiola all hit the net one time.  Midfielder Julia Shackleton registered an assist.

Gettysburg took 26 shots and Rowan had 11.  Goalie Lindsay Clinton played 54:53 and made four saves in the win.  Goalie Caroline Gordon was in the net for the final 5:07.  For the Profs,
goalie Lindsay Barrie (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) stopped four shots.

Attack Becca Wood (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) scored three goals and had one assist.  Attack Ellen Brigham (sr. Oakton, VA/Oakton) and midfielder Jamie Blondina (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) each produced one goal.

It was Rowan’s (11-6) 10th appearance in the national tournament.  The Profs advanced to the national tournament in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2002, 1999, 1995 and 1993.

The 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament included 32 teams.  Twenty-one conferences were awarded automatic qualifiers. Five teams were selected from independent and non-automatic qualifying conference in Pool B. The final six berths were filled with institutions from automatic qualifying conferences that were not conference champions and the remaining Pool B teams.
