Women's Lacrosse Receives At-Large Bid To NCAA Championship Tournament

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.  Rowan will travel to Gettysburg College for a first round game on Wednesday, May 8 at 3 p.m.

The winner of the game faces the winner of the first round contest between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (14-3) and St. John Fisher College (15-3) in the regional on Saturday, May 11.  The region finals are scheduled for Sunday, May 12.  The national semifinals and championship will be played on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19 at Stevenson University’s Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills, MD.

Rowan (11-5) is making its 10th appearance in the national tournament.  The Profs advanced to the national tournament in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2002, 1999, 1995 and 1993. Gettysburg (18-1) earned an automatic berth to the NCAAs as the Centennial Conference Champion.  The Bullets won the national title in 2011 and finished second in 2006.  They also have three third place finishes.  It is Gettysburg’s 13th postseason trip and 12th straight.

Attack Becca Wood (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) is the team’s leading scorer with 87 points.  She has scored 80 goals and has seven assists.  Wood has collected 38 ground balls and caused 22 turnovers.  Midfielder Jamie Blondina (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) has contributed with 48 goals and 18 assists for 66 points.  She has registered 32 ground balls, 25 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers.

Attacks Vicky Sucharski (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Marissa Micciche (jr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) have totaled 37 (23-14) and 32 (24-8) points respectively.  Midfielder Brittany Bollendorf (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) has produced 14 points (11-3) in her rookie season.  She has 28 ground balls and 14 draw controls.  Attack Ellen Brigham (sr. Oakton, VA/Oakton) has added 10 points with nine goals and one assist.

Midfielder Shannon O’Brien (sr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) has recorded 128 draw controls, 42 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers.  Defender Lauren Callaghan (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) has 38 ground balls.  Defender Shana O’Donnell (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) has tallied 22 ground balls, 15 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers.  Midfielder Jess Casterline (fr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) has contributed with 21 ground balls.

Goalie Lindsay Barrie (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) has an 8-5 record with 100 saves for a 43.7 save percentage.  She has a 10.57 goals against average.  Goalie Mary Narozanick (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) has posted a 3-0 record in her first season.  She has stopped 24 shots for a 38.7 save percentage.  Her goals against average stands at 10.02.

This year, Rowan finished second in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a 4-1 mark.  The Profs have a six-game win streak and they won their last game over conference opponent Montclair State University, 11-9.   

The 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament includes 32 teams.  Twenty-one conferences were awarded automatic qualifiers. Five teams were selected from independent and non-automatic qualifying conference in Pool B. The final six berths were filled with institutions from automatic qualifying conferences that were not conference champions and the remaining Pool B teams.
