AUBURN, NY – The Rowan University baseball team suffered its second loss of the NCAA Regional to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 5-2 on Thursday.
The Profs were the third seed and they finish the year with a 32-14 record. RPI, seeded seventh, has a 29-14 record. Earlier today, the fifth seed Neumann University eliminated the eighth seed Moravian College, 5-3. In the other games, number four Farmingdale State University (29-13) plays the top seed Ithaca College (35-6) and the second seed SUNY Cortland (35-9) faces the sixth seed Amherst College (26-11).
The winners of the eight regional tournaments advance to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 24-28 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.
Right-hander Sean Conroy threw a complete game for the win. He (8-1) scattered six hits and gave up two runs, one earned. Conroy struck out seven batters. Right-hander Jeff White (sr. Medford, NJ/Sterling) had the loss. He (5-1) went seven innings and allowed five earned runs.
Third baseman Tim LeSuer went two for four with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder Shane Matthews and second baseman Al Mersman each contributed with one hit and one RBI. Matthews had a double. Left fielder Tyler Listing registered one hit and scored two runs. First baseman Andrew Kalish and catcher Chris Holomakoff had one hit and one run scored apiece.
Rowan second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) was two for four with one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored one run.
RPI had a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Profs tied the score in the top of the fifth. Williams walked and scored on Benak’s single through the right side. Benak went to second on the throw and he stole third. He crossed the plate on a passed ball. The Engineers went up 5-2 in the eighth inning. LeSuer knocked in two runs with a double down the right field line. Mersman had a sacrifice fly that scored Kalish.
Rowan received an automatic bid to the postseason as the champion of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. This was the Profs’ 22nd appearance and fourth straight in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
