Baseball Defeats The College of New Jersey, 14-5

EWING, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated The College of New Jersey, 14-5 in a conference game on Friday.

The Profs are 27-11 overall and 11-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Lions have a 17-18 record with an 8-8 conference mark.  On Thursday, Rowan defeated The College of New Jersey, 4-2 at home. 

Left-hander Ryan Sharkey (so. Rutherford, NJ/St. Mary) was the winning pitcher.  He (2-0) threw seven innings and gave up two runs, one earned.  Right-hander Brendan Kelly (jr. Butler, NJ/Butler) took the loss.  He (6-3) allowed nine runs and seven were earned in 4.1 innings. 

Rowan designated hitter Casey Grimes (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) contributed with a home run and three RBIs.  Left fielder Nick Kreiger (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalpan) was three for five with a double, one RBI and two runs scored.  Center fielder Eric Perez (jr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) produced three hits (four at bats) and one run scored.  Shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) chipped in with two hits (five at bats), a double, three RBIs and one run scored. 

Center fielder Bobby Romano (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added one double in two at bats and two RBIs.  Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and catcher C.J. Szymczak (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) each registered one hit and scored two runs.  Right fielder Eric Sellitto (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had one double, one RBI and one run scored.

For TCNJ, catcher Matt Facas (fr. Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) went two for three with a double and one RBI.  Second baseman Jake DeWitt (so. Bordentown, NJ/Florence) and right fielder Mike Murphy (sr. Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) each had two hits.  Pinch hitter David Rondesko (so. South River, NJ/South River) registered a double, one RBI and one run scored.  Second baseman Scott Kelly (sr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) added one hit and one run scored.

The Profs had a 3-0 lead after three innings.  Grimes recorded a sac fly in the first and a two-run homer in the third.  The Lions got on the scoreboard with one run in the fourth.  Scott Kelly crossed the plate on a ground out.  Rowan scored eight runs in the top of the fifth and TCNJ had one, which made the score 11-2. 

In the fifth inning, Sellitto doubled in two runs and he went home on a wild pitch.  Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) scored on an error.  Williams knocked in two runs with a double to left center.  Kreiger had a single up the middle, scoring Williams. First baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) walked with the bases loaded and Kreiger came home.  In the bottom half of the fifth, Facas posted a RBI double.  Szymczak scored on Williams’ base hit in the sixth inning for a 12-2 advantage.   

Rowan travels to Kean University on Saturday, April 27 for a conference doubleheader at 11:30 a.m.  It is the last two games of the regular season before the conference championship tournament starts on Tuesday, April 30.
