Baseball Comes From Behind To Win, 4-2 Over The College of New Jersey

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team came from behind to win, 4-2 over The College of New Jersey in a conference game on Thursday afternoon.

Right-hander Steven Melchiorre (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) was the winning pitcher in relief.  He (5-3) threw 2.2 innings and only allowed one hit.  Righty Robert Schneider (sr. Township of Washington, NJ/Westwood Reg.) had the loss.  In 7.1 innings, he (1-5) gave up three hits and three runs, two earned.     

The Profs have a 26-11 record and they are 10-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Lions are 17-17 overall and 8-7 in the conference.  Rowan faces TCNJ again on Friday, April 26 in Ewing at 3:30 p.m.

Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) led Rowan with three hits (four at bats), a home run and two RBIs.  Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) chipped in with one hit, one RBI and one run scored.  Designated hitter Casey Grimes (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) posted one RBI.  Catcher Stephen Petriello (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) each scored one run.   

TCNJ second baseman Scott Kelly (sr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) contributed with one hit (five at bats) and scored one run.  First baseman Josh Limon (so. Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) registered one RBI.  Center fielder Joe Dispoto (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one run scored.  Catcher Paul Searles (jr. Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) posted a double.     

Rowan trailed 2-0 going into the sixth inning.  Benak reached base with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Grimes.  McMenamin drove in Petriello with a base hit to right field.  In the seventh, Williams crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice with Benak at bat.  McMenamin recorded a solo home run in the eighth inning.  It was his second on the year. 

TCNJ got on the scoreboard with one run in the first inning.  Limon had a sacrifice fly that scored Kelly.  The Lions’ second run came in the fifth.  Dispoto led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch.  He moved to third on a ground out and came home on an error.
