Baseball Wins 6-4 Over Alvernia University

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won 6-4 over Alvernia University on Wednesday. 

The Profs improve to 20-10 overall while the Crusaders are 23-9 on the season.  Left-hander Ryan Sharkey (so. Rutherford, NJ/St. Mary) was the winning pitcher.  He (1-0) threw 3.1 innings and only allowed one hit.  Right-hander Cody Smith (sr. Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) had the loss.  He (2-1) gave up two hits and two earned runs in three innings.

Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) led Rowan with three hits (four at bats) and two RBIs.  Designated hitter Casey Grimes (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) registered a double, one RBI and one run scored.  Shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and two runs scored.  Left fielder Nick Kreiger (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) added one hit and scored two runs.  Catcher Stephen Petriello (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and right fielder Eric Sellitto (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) each chipped in with a double and one RBI.

For Alvernia, center fielder Leon Stimpson (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Malvern Prep) was two for three with three RBIs.  Left fielder Chris Gehris (jr. Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) produced two hits and one RBI.  Catcher Kevin Bailey (sr. Fallston, MD/Fallston) had two hits, one double and two runs scored.  Designated hitter Billy Turner (sr. Columbia, NJ/North Warren Reg.) was two for four with one run scored.

The score was tied at four going into the seventh inning.  First baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) walked to start the bottom half.  He went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Grimes’ double down the right field line.  Sellitto knocked in Grimes with a double to left field.

Both teams had two runs in the second inning.  The Crusaders took the lead with a RBI single by Gehris in the third.  The Profs scored two runs in the fourth for a 4-3 advantage.  Williams crossed the plate on a sac bunt by Kreiger with an error.  Benak had a single through the right side, scoring Kreiger.  Alvernia tied the score in the sixth inning.  Bailey led off with a double and he came home on Stimpson’s base hit to left field.    

Rowan travels to New Jersey City University on Thursday, April 18 for a 3:30 p.m. conference game.
