Wood Scores Winning Goal For Women's Lacrosse In 16-15 Victory At Roanoke

ROANOKE, VA – Attack Becca Wood scored the winning goal for the Rowan University women’s lacrosse team in a 16-15 victory against Roanoke College on Thursday. 

Wood (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) recorded the game-winner on a free position with 3:19 remaining.  Goalie Mary Narozanick (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) made a great save that prevented overtime when she stopped attack Allison Bonanno’s shot with 11 seconds left.  Midfielder Jamie Blondina (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) had the tying goal unassisted at 54:56 in Rowan’s comeback.

The Profs have a 4-3 record with a four-game win streak.  The Maroon is 3-4 on the season.  Wood and Blondina each ended the game with five goals and one assist.  Attack Marissa Micciche (jr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) contributed with one goal and two assists.  Attacks Vicky Sucharski (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Ellen Brigham (sr. Oakton, VA/Oakton) and defender Brittany Bollendorf (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) added one goal and one assist apiece.   

Defender Lauren Callaghan (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and midfielder Shannon O’Brien (sr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) both chipped in with a goal.  O’Brien compiled 11 draw controls.  Rowan took 36 shots while Roanoke had 24.

Roanoke midfielder Darragh Evarts scored six goals and had one assist.  Bonanno collected three goals and seven assists.  Attack Jamie Golden registered three goals and one assist.  Midfielder Kathleen Wager posted two goals and midfielder Nicole Zelnik had one.  Goalie Lauren Curtin compiled 13 saves.

The second half started with Rowan ahead 11-7.  The two teams exchanged two goals apiece then the Maroon had three straight to trail by one (13-12) at 45:40.  Bonanno, Evarts and Golden all hit the net one time.  Bollendorf put the lead back to two (14-12) at 53:10 with an unassisted goal.  Roanoke answered with three straight to go up by one (15-14) with 5:55 remaining.  Zelnik, Bonanno and Evarts each scored one time. 

The Profs had goals by Wood, Blondina and Brigham in the first 2:32 of the game.  Evarts scored at 5:24 and 6:34 while Wood had a goal in between (6:09).  The Profs led 8-2 at 11:16 after Blondina, Wood, O’Brien and Micciche each scored.  Callaghan’s goal from Sucharski at 21:13 increased the advantage to six (10-4).  Roanoke out scored Rowan, 3-1 in the final five minutes and trailed by four goals at the break. 

Next week, Rowan starts its conference schedule at Ramapo College on Friday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
