Baseball Defeats UMass Boston, 9-3 On Third Day In Florida

AUBURNDALE, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated UMass Boston, 9-3 on Sunday afternoon.  It was the Profs’ third game on their spring break trip.

The Profs are 8-2 overall and the Beacons have a 1-4 record.  Catcher Connor Grant (jr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.), right fielder Eric Sellitto (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) all contributed with two RBIs.  Sellitto scored two runs while Grant and Williams had one apiece.  Center fielder Eric Perez (jr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) was three for four at the plate with one run scored.

Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) chipped in with two hits and scored one run.  Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and left fielder Rich Powelson (so. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) each added one hit, one RBI and one run scored.  Designated hitter Rich Fagan (sr. Nutley, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) produced two hits and first baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) scored one run.

Right-hander Dylan Johannink (so. Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) was the winning pitcher.  In five innings, he (1-0) scattered four hits and gave up one earned run.  Righty Kurtis White took the loss.  He allowed seven hits in 4.1 innings and four runs, two were earned.

Beacons’ catcher Todd Ezold registered two hits in three at bats and one RBI.  First baseman/second baseman Matt Consiglio had one hit, one RBI and one run scored.  Center fielder Charles LaPaglia was one for three at the plate with one run scored.

The Profs had a 2-0 lead after the first inning.  McMenamin drove in Kelly with a single to center field.  Sellitto had a base hit up the middle, which scored Grant.  UMass Boston had one run in the bottom of the second.  Consiglio came home on a double play.  Rowan was ahead 4-1 after Grant’s two RBI single in the fourth inning. 

The Beacons had two runs in the sixth inning and pulled within one (4-3).  Consiglio registered a RBI with a ground out and right fielder Jamill Moquette scored the run.  LaPaglia crossed the plate on a single by Ezold.  Rowan pulled away with three runs in the seventh inning and two in the ninth.  Perez and McMenamin both scored on an error in the seventh.  Williams posted a double to right center field that sent home Sellitto.  In the ninth, Williams singled in Sellitto and Powelson’s base hit scored Williams. 

Rowan faces Western New England University on Monday, March 18 at 11 a.m. in Winter Haven, FL.  The game will be played at Chain of Lakes Field.
