LEESBURG, FL – The Rowan University baseball team edged number one ranked SUNY Cortland, 5-4 on Saturday at Lake Sumter Community College.
It was Rowan’s second game at the RussMatt Tournament during spring break. The Profs are 7-2 overall while the Red Dragons are 10-4 on the season. On Friday, Rowan lost 12-8 against Cortland.
Right-hander Jeff White (sr. Medford, NJ/Sterling) earned the win on the mound. White (1-0) went six innings and gave up six hits and four earned runs. He struck out four batters. Righty Nick Henderson (jr. Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) earned the save. Right-hander Mike Hughes had the loss. He (1-1) allowed eight hits and five earned runs.
Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and center fielder Eric Perez (jr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) each totaled three hits (four at bats) and one RBI for the Profs. McMenamin scored two runs and Perez had one. Pinch hitter Ryan Easterday (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) drove in two runs with a double. Catcher C.J. Szymczak (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) chipped in with one hit and one RBI. First baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) added a double and one run scored while second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) scored one run.
Cortland pinch hitter Chris Jackson recorded a three run homer. Catcher P.J. Rinaldi was two for five at the plate with one run scored. First baseman Max Rosing had one hit in three at bats, one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop John Adornetto registered one hit (three at bats) and scored one run.
Rowan got on the scoreboard with one run in the first inning. Benak reached base with a walk and later scored on McMenamin’s single. In the fourth inning, both teams scored one run. With one out, McMenamin had a base hit and he advanced to third on double by Perez. Szymczak grounded out and McMenamin crossed the plate. The Red Dragons’ run came on Rosing’s RBI double that scored Adornetto.
Cortland tied the score at four with Jackson’s three run homer in the sixth inning. Rowan posted its winning run in the top of the seventh. Kelly had a double and he came home on Perez’s single.
Rowan’s next game is against UMass Boston on Sunday, March 17 at 11 a.m. in Auburndale, FL.
