GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won, 10-5 against Penn State Abington on Wednesday afternoon.
The Profs are 6-1 overall and the Nittany Lions have a 4-10 record. Prior to the game, Rowan decided to platoon its pitchers and the innings were predetermined. Right-hander Mike Behar (sr. Staten Island, NJ/Tottenville) was the winning pitcher. He (1-0) threw two innings, scattered four hits and gave up one earned run. Righty Daniel Hill (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) took the loss. Hill also produced two hits (four at bats) and one RBI.
Right fielder/first baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) led the Profs with four hits (five at bats), three RBIs, a double and one run scored. Center fielder Eric Perez (jr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) contributed with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and left fielder Scott Bruno (jr. Middletown, NJMiddletown S.) each added one hit, one RBI and one run scored. Bruno’s hit was a double.
Shortstop Danny Lang (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was two for four at the plate with one RBI. First baseman Casey Grimes (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and scored two runs. Left fielder Nick Kreiger (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) registered one hit and one run scored. Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) scored two runs.
For Penn State Abington, catcher Mike Kerns (sr. Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) went two for four with two RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder A.J. Vagliani (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) registered one hit and one RBI. Center fielder Dustin Kology (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) scored two runs and second baseman Mark McCouch (sr. Hatboro-Horsham, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy College) crossed the plate one time.
The Nittany Lions went up 4-0 in the first inning. The Profs came back with six runs in the bottom half. Kelly drove in two with a single to center field and Perez recorded a two-RBI double. McMenamin came home on a wild pitch and Lang singled in a run.
The two teams each scored once in the second inning. Kerns’ base hit scored Kology while Grimes went home on a ground out by McMenamin. Rowan added three more runs, one in the fifth inning and two in the seventh. Pinch runner Bobby Romano (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) scored on an error in the fifth. Bruno doubled in one run in the seventh inning. He scored on Kelly’s single through the right side.
Rowan heads to Florida for seven games over spring break, Friday, March 15 through Friday, March 22. The baseball team plays number one ranked SUNY Cortland on Friday, March 15 at 5 p.m. and on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m.
