ASHLAND, VA – The Rowan University baseball team won two games, 13-11 and 7-5 at Randolph-Macon College on Monday. The first contest was the completion of Sunday’s second game of a doubleheader. The Profs were ahead 13-11 when the nightcap was halted due to darkness at the end of the eighth inning.
Rowan is undefeated with a 3-0 record while Randolph-Macon is 3-4 on the season. Right-hander Christian Rahman (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) was the winning pitcher for the game that started on Sunday. Rahman went three innings and scattered four hits. He struck out three batters. Righty Patrick D’Ascenzo (so. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) threw the ninth inning for the save. Right-hander J.T. Williamson was the losing pitcher. In 1.1 innings, he gave up three hits and three earned runs.
Left fielder Rich Powelson (so. Shamong, NJ/Seneca), first baseman Casey Grimes (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) and center fielder Eric Perez (jr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) all recorded three RBIs. Powelson had three hits (five at bats), a double and two runs scored. Grimes recorded a three run homer and scored two runs. Perez was two for five at the plate with a double.
Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) totaled four hits in six at bats, one double and two runs scored. Catcher Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) chipped in with three hits (five at bats), two doubles and two runs scored. Right fielder Nick Krieger (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) produced two hits in three at bats, one RBI and one run scored.
For the Yellow Jackets, left fielder Michael Trentham and center fielder Jeb Weymouth each registered three RBIs. Catcher Tim Benjamin was three for four with two runs scored. Shortstop Travis Lodge had two hits (three at bats), two runs scored and one RBI.
Randolph-Macon was ahead 10-5 after three innings. Rowan scored four runs in the fourth and trailed by one. Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) led off a double and later came home on designated hitter Ryan Easterday’s (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) single through the left side. Perez knocked Easterday and Powelson in with a double to left field. The Profs took the lead 12-10 with three runs in the fifth inning. Grimes’ home run was to right field, scoring McMenamin and Kelly. The two teams exchanged runs in the eighth inning. For the Profs, Kreiger came home on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca).
Easterday had the win on the mound in the 7-5 victory. In 6.1 innings, he struck out six batters and only allowed one earned run. Righty Dylan Johannink (so. Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) recorded a save. Right-hander Tanner Phillips took the loss. He (1-1) gave up three hits and two earned runs in 0.1 innings.
Benak went two for five with a double and two RBIs. Right fielder Eric Sellitto (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) contributed with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Connor Grant (jr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.), shortstop Danny Lang (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Kreiger each registered one hit, one RBI and one run scored. Kelly added two runs scored.
Weymouth totaled three hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Benjamin went four for five with one RBI. Designated hitter Matt Fischgrund produced two RBIs and Heideman had one.
Randolph-Macon had a 5-2 advantage after five innings. Rowan went up 7-5 with five runs in the sixth. Kelly crossed the plate on Grant’s single to right field. Perez had a sacrifice fly that brought Grant home. Kreiger drove in a run with a single and he later scored on a base hit by Lang. Benak had a double down the right field line, scoring Lang.
Rowan plays SUNY Oneonta in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2 in the home opener at 11 a.m.
