Box Score CHESTER, PA – The Rowan University men's basketball team suffered a 102-94 loss in two overtimes against Delaware Valley College on Friday night in the first round of the Widener University Tip-Off for Autism Awareness.
Rowan (0-1) will play Berkeley College in the consolation game on Saturday, November 16 at 1 p.m. Delaware Valley (1-0) faces Widener University in the championship at 3 p.m. In the first round, Widener rolled over Berkeley, 112-76.
Guard Nick Sullivan (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) led the Aggies with 32 points, which included seven-three pointers. Guard Francis Arnold (jr. Jamaica, NY/Francis Lewis) contributed with 28 points and forward/center Chris Moran (so. Whitehall, PA/Whitehall-Copley) added 15. Moran also pulled down 14 rebounds. Guard Zach Sly (so. St. Petersburg, FL/Faith Baptist Christian) chipped in with 11 points.
The Profs had five players in double figures. Guards Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) each scored 15 points. McNamara tied his career high with 20 rebounds while Rosenberg dished 14 assists. Guards Phil Jackson (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Matt Whitworth (sr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) produced 14 points apiece. Forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, J/West Milford) totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds.
With 2:03 left in the second half, Rosenberg hit a jumper and the Profs led by one (78-77). Sly made two foul shots at 1:21, which put the Aggies up 79-78. McNamara hit the second of two free throws at the 51 second mark and tied the score at 79. Both teams missed a layup in the final seconds and the game went into overtime.
In the first overtime, Arnold hit a three-pointer (4:08) and Jackson answered with a three (3:01), which knotted the score at 82. Arnold sank two free throws at 2:02. Jackson's layup tied the score at 84 with 1:01 on the clock. The Aggies failed to make two foul shots and a jumper while the Profs missed a jumper, which resulted in another overtime.
Sullivan put Delaware Valley ahead 87-84 at 4:27 with a three-pointer in the second overtime. He kept the Aggies on top (89-86) with two foul shots at 3:31. Guard Zach Sible (jr. Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) followed with a three (2:31) for a six-point lead (92-86). The Profs trailed by four (92-88) after a layup by Sofman with 1:09 remaining. Moran (1:03) nailed two free throws and Sullivan (0:55, 0:37) made four straight, which increased the advantage to 10 (98-88).
McNamara hit a three-pointer at the 33 second mark and Sullivan had two more foul shots (0:28). With 24 seconds left, Whitworth's three made the score 100-94. Moran ended the scoring with two free throws with nine seconds remaining.
