Football Upsets #11 Wesley, 24-17

Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – Quarterback Bill McCarty's 71-yard touchdown pass to wideout Frankie Goris with 3:03 to play gave Rowan University a 24-17 win over #11 Wesley College on Saturday.
 
The Profs are 4-2 overall, while the Wolverines have an overall mark of 5-2. Rowan has a  7-0 all-time against Wesley.
 
Rowan quarterback Paul Hamersma (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) was 7 of 18 for 53 yards before he left the game in the third quarter with an injury. McCarty (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) finished the game and completed four passes in five attempts for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Withler Marcelin (so. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp) ran the ball 24 times for a career-high 163 yards. Wideout Todd Guillaume (so. Irvington, NJ/Immaculate Conception) made three catches for 28 yards, while Goris (so. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) caught two passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.
 
On the defense, linebacker Dominic Caruso (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) made 10 tackles and recorded two interceptions. He returned his first interception, 62 yards for a touchdown. Linebacker Tyler Jenkins (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) collected 14 tackles, 3.5 for loss (-12 yards). Linebacker Darren Dungee (so. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) collected nine tackles, while defensive lineman Chris Alvarez (jr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) tallied five tackles, 2.5 for loss (-18 yards), forced two fumbles and had two sacks (-13 yards).
 
For Wesley, quarterback Joe Callahan (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) was 29 of 50 for 220 yards and a touchdown. Running back Rick Jackson (so. Newark, DE/Appoquinimik) carried the ball 18 times for 54 yards and one touchdown. Jackson also caught a touchdown pass. Wideout Jeremiah Howe (sr. Cambridge, MD/Cambridge S.) caught nine passes for 53 yards, while wide receiver Steve Koudossou (jr. Waldorf, MD/Westlake) made six catches for 90 yards. Cornerback Derrick Bender (jr. Freehold Borough, NJ/Freehold) tallied 11 tackles, while linebacker Jordan Wescott (jr. Greenwood, DE/Woodbridge) recorded eight tackles.
 
Wesley scored first as kicker Jon Storck (jr. Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) made a 26-yard field goal at 10:33 of the opening quarter. The Wolverines got the ball after an interception. Rowan then drove down the field and kicker Dan Dawson (sr. Westville, NJ/Eastern Reg.) tied the game with a 25-yard field goal with 6:47 left in the first quarter. The game was 3-3 at halftime.
 
The Profs took the lead in the third as wideout Ed Eisenhart (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) caught a two-yard touchdown pass from McCarty on fourth down with 1:24 on the clock. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Caruso intercepted Callahan and took the ball back 62 yards for a touchdown and a 17-3 lead.
 
Jackson made the score 17-10, scoring on a two-yard run at the 10:53 mark. Jackson then tied the game at 4:34, catching a 15-yard pass from Callahan. On Rowan's third play of the ensuing drive, McCarty found Goris for the 71-yard touchdown strike with just over three minutes remaining.
 
Wesley drove down to the Rowan eight yardline in the final two minutes, but on third and goal, defensive back Frank Ruopoli (sr. Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) intercepted Callahan's pass in the end zone to seal the victory.
 
Rowan will travel to face William Paterson University on Saturday, October 26 for a 1 p.m. kick-off.
