GLASSBORO, NJ – The Ramapo College men’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 88-87 in overtime in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The score was tied, 82-82 at the end of regulation. At 3:08 in overtime, Roadrunners’ forward Elgin Brown (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) had a tip-in. Profs’ guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) sunk two free throws at the two minute mark to tie the game at 84. After a jumper (1:26) by Rowan guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley), Brown made two foul shots (1:10). Rosenberg’s free throw with 22 seconds left gave the Profs a one point advantage (87-86). With nine seconds remaining, Ramapo guard Garret Thiel (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) nailed a jump shot.
The Roadrunners improve to 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Ramapo was ranked 10th in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. The Profs have a 10-3 record with a 4-3 NJAC mark.
Guard Anthony LoRusso (sr. Mahwah, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) led the Roadrunners with 25 points, five rebounds and three assists. Brown totaled 21 points and a game-high 16 boards. Guard Will Sanborn (sr. Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) collected 17 points and six rebounds, while forward Stephon Treadwell (sr. Newark, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) had 14 points and eight boards.
For Rowan, Rosenberg compiled 21 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals. Guard Daniel Waynick (so. Twin Rivers, NJ/Hightstown) added 14 points and five rebounds off the bench. Guards Phil Jackson (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) registered 13 points apiece. White also grabbed seven boards. McNamara finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) contributed with 11 points, while forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) had seven boards.
White’s layup at 16:47 in the first period gave the Profs a one point lead (5-4). The Roadrunners went on a 12-2 run to go ahead, 16-7 at 14:32. Treadwell scored four points, Sanborn and LoRusso each hit a three-pointer and Brown had two foul shots. Sanborn’s three extended the advantage to 10 (23-13) at 11:13. Rowan recorded the next six points to pull within four (23-19) at 9:11. Waynick had two baskets and White added two free throws. The Profs trailed by six (25-19) after two foul shots by Treadwell at 8:46. Rowan went on an 8-0 run to go up by two (27-25) at 7:25. Guard Fred Battee (sr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) and McNamara both had three points, while Waynick chipped in with a layup.
LoRusso’s jumper at 7:12 tied the game (27-27). After a free throw by Rosenberg at 6:09, Treadwell made a basket (5:50) and two foul shots (5:20) to give Ramapo a 31-28 lead. The Roadrunners were on top, 38-35 with 2:35 on the clock. Guard Keith Benthall (so. Jersey City, NJ/Ferris) hit a layup (2:16) and forward John Martens (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) had two free throws (1:46). LoRusso’s three-pointer with 33 seconds left stretched the advantage to eight (48-40). Jackson converted a layup with four seconds remaining to make the score, 48-42 at the intermission. LoRusso totaled 15 points in the first half. Treadwell and Waynick registered 12 points apiece.
At 18:25 in the second stanza, White’s layup brought the Profs within four (48-44). Ramapo scored six straight points for a 10 point lead (54-44) at 16:49. Brown tallied four points and LoRusso had two. Rowan answered with a 21-1 surge to go ahead by 10 (65-55) at 12:04. Benson collected eight points, Rosenberg followed with seven and Jackson had six. McNamara’s jump shot at 8:16 pushed the advantage to 15 (74-59). Ramapo had an 11-3 run to pull within seven (77-70) at 4:53. Brown scored five of the 11 points.
The score was 82-75 (1:30) after a jumper by Rosenberg. The Roadrunners recorded the final seven points of the period to send the game into overtime. LoRusso sunk two foul shots (1:24) and Sanborn had one (:43). With 29 seconds left, LoRusso made two free throws. Brown tied the game (82-82) with two foul shots at the 14 second mark.
