GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward/midfielder Earl Hamilton scored the game-winning goal to give Catholic University a 3-2 victory over Rowan University in the championship of the Rowan Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
Catholic improves to 3-1, while Rowan has a 2-2 record. Prior in the consolation, Vassar College (4-1) blanked John Jay College (1-3), 5-0. In the first round on Friday, Catholic defeated Vassar, 2-1 and Rowan had a 7-1 win over John Jay.
Profs’ back Shane Dooley (sr. Burlington Twp., NJ/Burlington Twp.) tapped in a shot by midfielder Parker Oris (so. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) at 52:48 to tie the score (2-2). At 103:06 in the second overtime, midfielder Justin Oloriz (jr. Laguna Niguel, CA/Mater Dei) sent a shot into the middle of the box and Hamilton deflected the ball in.
Back Ethan DaPonte (jr. Bristol, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) scored on a scramble in front of the net at 3:12 to give Catholic a 1-0 advantage. Oloriz earned the assist. Rowan tied the game (1-1) at 14:13. Back Dave Schwartz (so. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Valley Forge Military Academy) had a throw-in that went into the middle of the box and midfielder Shane Kohler (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) headed the ball into the net. At 30:07, forward Ben Fernandez (jr. Bethesda, MD/Chevy Chase) scored on a header off a corner kick by midfielder Tyler Zimmerman (fr. Raleigh, NC/Cardinal Gibbons.
Catholic took 15 shots and Rowan had 13. Cardinals’ goalkeeper Torsten Meuscke (so. Gaitherburg, MD/Magruder) made two saves. Profs’ goalkeeper Ryan Gill (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) stopped one shot in 30:07. Goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (sr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) turned away five shots in the final 72:59.
