OWING MILLS, MD – The Rowan University field hockey team defeated host Stevenson University, 5-2 on Thursday night.
The Profs are 4-2 overall while the Mustangs drop to 3-4 on the season. Back Erika Mecchella (so. Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester) put Rowan on the scoreboard at 1:55. Mecchella scored with a redirect in front of the cage off a penalty corner. Back Jenna O’Sullivan (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) had the assist. Midfielder Karlee Henderson (so. Elmer, NJ/Woodstown) put the Profs up 2-0 with an unassisted goal (29:43). She tapped the ball into the near post after the first shot was cleared.
Forward Amy Tamarana (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River) produced Stevenson’s first goal at 32:37 with a pass from back Karen Mata (fr. Bethesda, MD/Walter Johnson). In the second half, Rowan midfielder Marisa Marini (fr. Carneys Point, NJ/Padua Academy (DE)) had an unassisted goal (36:35). Back Kelsey O’Neill (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) extended the lead to three (4-1) at 52:50. She knocked in a feed from midfielder Marisa Schoepflin (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.).
Mecchella recorded her second goal (61:53) of the game when she deflected in back Erin Bernat’s (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) shot. The Mustangs ended the scoring at the 68 minute mark with an unassisted goal by back Ariella Hopp (so. Jarrettsville, MD/Institute of Notre Dame).
Rowan collected 25 shots while Stevenson took nine. Goalie Steph Colombo (jr. Moorestown, NJ/Camden Catholic) played 56:09 in the Profs’ cage and made five saves. Goalie Jen Goldberg (sr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) stopped one shot in 13:51. For the Mustangs, goalie Katie Cavanaugh (fr. Parkville, MD/Perry Hall) turned away nine shots.
Rowan travels to Montclair State University on Saturday, September 22 for a 1 p.m. conference game.
