Christopher Newport Eliminates Rowan, 4-2 In Third Round Of NCAA Division III Newport News Regional

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Top seeded Christopher Newport University eliminated the fourth seed Rowan University, 4-2 in the third round of the NCAA Division III Newport News Regional on Friday afternoon.  The game was played at Captains Park.

The remainder of the double elimination tournament continues on Saturday, May 19.  Christopher Newport (32-8) will play the third seed Shenandoah University (31-12) in the 11 a.m. game on Saturday.  The second seed Salisbury University (34-8) faces the winner of the 11 a.m. game at 2:30 p.m.  Rowan finishes the season with a 31-15 record.

Earlier on Friday, Salisbury knocked the sixth seed Messiah College (20-25) out of the tournament, 9-3.  In the third game of the day, Salisbury beat Shenandoah, 2-1 in 14 innings.  The winners of the eight regional tournaments move on to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 25-29 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI. 

Right-hander Nick Santalucia (so. Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) earned the win.  He (6-0) allowed one earned run on five hits in seven innings.  Righty Ryan Fleischmann (jr. Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) threw the final inning for his 10th save.  Left-hander Kyle Brown (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) took the loss.  He (4-3) surrendered three runs, two earned on four hits in three innings.

Captains’ center fielder Shannon Mark (sr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) and right fielder Steven Lindemuth (sr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) both went two for four with one RBI.  Shortstop Billy Steel (so. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) posted one hit (two at bats) and one run scored.  Catcher Ben Lenda (sr. Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) registered two hits (three at bats), one run scored and a double.  Left fielder Connor Madden (sr. Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) and second baseman Matt Shoemaker (sr. Newport News, VA/Menchville) collected one hit (four at bats) and one RBI apiece.  Shoemaker’s hit was a double. 

For Rowan, center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) posted a double (three at bats) and one RBI.  Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) and catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) each had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored.  Turano’s hit was a double.  Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainsfield, NJ/South Plainsfield) contributed with one RBI.  Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and Turano was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Christopher Newport went up, 1-0 in the bottom of the first.  Steel walked with one out and he moved to second on a balk.  He advanced to third on Madden’s single to center field.  Steel came home on an error with Saunders at bat.  The Captains added one run in the third.  Madden led off with a walk.  He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Luke Saunders (sr. Lancaster, VA/Lancaster).  Madden stole third and scored on Lindemuth’s single down the left field line.  In the fourth, Lenda ripped a double to left field.  He advanced to third on designated hitter Christopher McDougal’s (jr. Poquoson, VA/Denbigh) sacrifice bunt.  Mark hit a sacrifice fly to left and Lenda crossed the plate. 

Rowan got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the seventh.  Hill had a base hit through the right side.  Left fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) followed with a single to left field.  Second baseman Brandon Winkler’s (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third.  Benak’s ground out knocked in Hill.  Christopher Newport answered with one run in the bottom half for a 4-1 advantage.  Shoemaker doubled down the left field line and went to third on a single by Lindemuth.  Shoemaker came home on an error on a pickoff attempt.  The Profs cut the deficit to two (4-2) with one run in the eighth.  Turano hit a leadoff double down the right field line.  With two outs, Colarte doubled to right bringing in Turano.
