WILLIAMSBURG, VA – The third seed Shenandoah University defeated the fourth seed Rowan University, 5-4 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Newport News Regional on Wednesday night. The game was played at Plumeri Park on the campus of William and Mary College.
The remainder of the double elimination tournament continues on Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. Shenandoah (30-11) plays the second seed Salisbury University (32-7) in the second round on Thursday, May 17 at 4:30 p.m. Rowan (30-14) faces the sixth seed Messiah College (20-23) at 1 p.m. Top seeded Christopher Newport (30-8) takes on the fifth seed Lynchburg College (38-9) at 9:30 a.m.
In the other first round games on Wednesday in Newport News, VA, Messiah defeated Christopher Newport, 3-1 and Salisbury topped Lynchburg, 7-2. The winners of the eight regional tournaments move on to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 25-29 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.
Right-hander Vince Claudio (jr. Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) pitched seven innings for the win. He (7-1) allowed four runs, three earned on 11 hits. Righty Kyle Scallion (sr. Ashburn, VA/Bishop O’Connell) tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings for his fifth save of the season. Right-hander Steven Melchiorre (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) took the loss. He (5-2) surrendered five runs, four earned on 11 hits in 7.2 innings.
The Hornets were led by designated hitter Nick Beall (jr. Montclair, VA/Chesapeake CC) with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Right fielder Joey Donofrio (jr. Ashburn, VA/St. Peter’s) went two for five with two runs scored and a double. Third baseman Michael Paul (fr. Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) had two hits (three at bats), one RBI and a double. Center fielder Jake Prendergraft (sr. Knoxville, MD/Boonsboro) compiled two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Tucker Brown (sr. Newport News, VA/Menchville) posted one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. First baseman Cory Nelson (sr. Portmouth, VA/Alliance Christian) chipped in with one hit (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
For the Profs, catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was two for three with one run scored and a double. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) registered two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainsfield, NJ/South Plainsfield) contributed with three hits (five at bats), one run scored and a double. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) produced three hits (five at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) went one for one with one run scored. Designated hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) collected one hit (five at bats) and one RBI.
Rowan went ahead, 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Winkler and Benak had back-to-back singles. Magliaro drove in Winkler with a base hit to right field. After Turano walked, McMenamin hit an infield single that brought Benak home. Shenandoah pulled within one (2-1) in the bottom half. Donofrio led off with a double to left field. He scored on Prendergraft’s single up the middle.
The Profs added one run in the second. Hill started the inning with a base hit through the middle. With two outs, Winkler ripped a single down the left field line and Hill crossed the plate. The Hornets tied the game (3-3) in the third inning. Donofrio singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Prendergraft singled to right field and Donofrio advanced to third. Nelson’s single down the left field line knocked in Donofrio. Beall had a two out single to right field, scoring Prendergraft.
Shenandoah went up, 4-3 in the fifth. With one out, Nelson reached base on an error. He came home on Beall’s single to right field. The Hornets tacked on one run in the seventh. Brown hit a two out single to left field. Paul followed with a double to right center field, plating Brown. In the top of the eighth, Turano led off with a double to left field. He moved to third on a passed ball. Hill attempted a suicide squeeze and Turano was safe at home on an error.
