DOVER, DE – The Wesley College baseball team upset Rowan University, 9-4 in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolverines have a 19-9 record, while the Profs are 15-6. Rowan is ranked ninth and 15th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Polls respectively.
Right-hander Jeff Cochran (fr. Richboro, PA/Council Rock S.) pitched six innings for the win. He (2-2) gave up three earned runs on five hits. Righty Andrew Cooper (so. Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) picked up his second save. He tossed three innings, allowing one unearned run. Right-hander Brian Sietsma (so. Mahwah, NJ/Eastern Christian) took the loss. He (0-1) surrendered five runs, three earned in three innings.
Wesley right fielder Bryan Reshetar (sr. Newark, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) totaled three hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Shortstop Rob Benedict (sr. Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) went one for five with two RBIs and two runs scored. Center fielder Jon Carlson (jr. Lancaster, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) added two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Sam Farnell (jr. Aston, PA/Sun Valley), first baseman Geoff Kimmel (sr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) and catcher Casey Rothwell (sr. Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) all produced one hit and one run scored. Second baseman Matt Robles (jr. Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) contributed with one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Morgan Rupp (jr. Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) drove in one run.
For Rowan, right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) was two for four with two RBIs and a double. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) registered two hits (five at bats) and one run scored. Second baseman Rob Wilgus (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) chipped in with one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) and pinch hitter Casey Grimes (fr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) both had one hit and one run scored. Designated hitter Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) collected one RBI. Left fielder Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added two hits in four at bats.
Both teams scored one run in the second inning. In the top half, Kelly walked and went to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on third baseman Kevin McMenamin’s (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) single. Kelly crossed the plate on a ground out by Wilgus. Reshetar doubled to left field in the bottom of the inning. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Robles’ ground out.
Wesley broke the game open with seven runs in the fourth. Reshetar, Rothwell and Robles all singled to load the bases. Benedict followed with a single up the middle that knocked in Rothwell and Reshetar. Robles and Benedict came home on an error. Rupp’s sacrifice fly to center field allowed Carlson to score. Perone drove in Farnell with a base hit. Reshetar added a RBI single to right field.
The Profs cut the deficit to five (8-3) with two runs in the top of the fifth. Wilgus walked and later scored on a single by Hill. Turano’s sacrifice fly to left field plated Magliaro, who singled. In the bottom half, Benedict reached base on an error. After stealing second and third, he scored on an error. Rowan’s final run came in the ninth inning. Hill drew a bases loaded walk and Grimes came home.
