Rowan Wins Over Rutgers-Camden, 9-2

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 9-2 victory over Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday afternoon.

The Profs are 26-11 overall and 10-6 in the conference.  Rowan has a seven game winning streak.  The Scarlet Raptors have a 14-23 record with a 4-12 NJAC mark.  The Profs are ranked 20th and 30th in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Polls respectively.

Left-hander Kyle Brown (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) pitched seven innings for the win.  He   (4-1) allowed two unearned runs on five hits and struck out four hitters.  Righty Tommy Potts (so. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) took the loss.  He (3-4) gave up six runs, one earned on nine hits in five innings.

First baseman Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) led Rowan with two hits (four at bats), five RBIs, one run scored and a triple.  Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) went three for four with one RBI.  Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) compiled two hits (four at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double.  Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) tallied two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. 

Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.  Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) was one for four with two runs scored.  Designated hitter C.J. Szymczak (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) scored twice, while center fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) crossed the plate once.

For Rutgers-Camden, first baseman C.J. Mooney (sr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) and third baseman Ryan Griffith (so. Cumberland, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) each had two hits.  Shortstop Joe Merlino (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook Reg.) and designated hitter Jon Hydock (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) collected one hit and one run scored apiece.

The Scarlet Raptors went ahead, 2-0 in the top of the first inning.  With one out, Merlino reached base on an error.  Hydock followed with a single to left field.  The runners stole second and third.  Hydock and Merlino both scored on an error with Mooney at bat.  In the bottom half, Winkler led off with a single.  Turano drove him in with a single to center field.

The Profs broke the game open with five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.  Kreiger reached first on an error in the fifth.  He moved to second on Benak’s single.  Magliaro followed with a single down the left field line knocking in Kreiger.  With two outs and the bases loaded, McMenamin ripped a triple to right center field, plating Szymczak, Magliaro and Benak.  Hill’s RBI single allowed McMenamin to come home.  In the sixth, Winkler walked and went to third on a single by Magliaro.  Turano doubled off the left field fence and Winkler scored.  McMenamin hit a two out single to right field driving in Turano and Szymczak.
