CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Rutgers-Camden, 8-6 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game at Campbell’s Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Profs are 25-11 overall and 9-6 in the conference. Rowan is ranked 20th and 30th in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Polls respectively. The Scarlet Raptors have a 14-22 record with a 4-11 NJAC mark.
Right-hander Mike Behar (jr. Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) pitched six innings for the win. He (6-0) allowed four runs, three earned on 10 hits. Righty/shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) threw one inning for his fourth save. Right-hander Paul Walters (so. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) took the loss. He (2-2) surrendered five earned runs on six hits in six innings.
Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) led the Profs with two hits (five at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and two doubles. Left fielder Eric Perez (so. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) went two for three with three runs scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) tallied three hits (four at bats), two run scored and one RBI. Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Magliaro contributed with one hit (five at bats) and two RBIs. Designated hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) posted one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) registered a double and one run scored.
For Rutgers-Camden, right fielder Tristan Keyser (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) was three for four with two RBIs and a double. Designated hitter Connor Hall (fr. Delran, NJ/Delran) chipped in with two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Center fielder Albert Rivera (jr. Matawan, NJ/Matawan Reg.) collected two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Second baseman Jon Hydock (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) went two for four with one RBI. Left fielder Jon Siswo (sr. Port Reading, NJ/Woodbridge) and third baseman Ryan Griffith (so. Cumberland, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) both had one hit and one run scored. Pinch hitter Bruce Monro (jr. Matawan, NJ/Matawan Reg.) posted one hit (one at bat) and one RBI. Catcher Shaune Collins (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) scored once.
Rowan went ahead, 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Winkler led off with a single and Benak followed with a walk. The runners advanced on Magliaro’s groundout. Turano ripped a double to left field, plating Winkler and Benak. McMenamin’s single drove in Turano. In the bottom half, Hydock knocked in Rivera with a single to center field.
The Scarlet Raptors tied the game (3-3) with one run in the second and fourth innings. Collins walked and scored on a double by Keyser in the second. Hall reached on an error in the fourth. With two outs, Keyser singled to center field and Hall came home. The Profs answered with two runs in the top of the fifth. Perez and Winkler each had a base hit. Magliaro drove them in with a single. Rutgers-Camden pulled within one (5-4) in the bottom half. Hall plated Siswo with a single to right center field.
The Profs tacked on one run in the seventh and two in the eighth for an 8-4 advantage. Turano had a RBI double in the seventh that scored Perez. In the eighth, Colarte hit a two out double to left field. He moved to third on Perez’s single. Winkler followed with a single to right center field and Colarte came home. Benak’s base hit to center field allowed Perez to cross the plate. The Scarlet Raptors’ final two runs came in the bottom of the eighth. Hall led off with a single and he advanced to third on Griffith’s double to right field. Monro singled to left field, driving in Hall. Griffith scored on a ground out by Keyser.
The two teams meet again on Friday, April 27 in Glassboro, NJ at 3:30 p.m.
