GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 2-0 shutout over Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday afternoon.

The Profs improve to 22-11 overall and 6-6 in the conference.  The Cougars have a 23-9 record with an 8-4 NJAC mark.  In this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll, Kean is ranked eighth and Rowan is 22nd.

Right-hander Steven Melchiorre (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) pitched a complete game for the win.  He (4-1) scattered four hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters.  Righty Kevin Herget (jr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) took the loss.  He (5-3) surrendered two earned runs on nine hits in eight innings.  Herget registered 10 strikeouts.

Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) led the Profs with two doubles (four at bats) and one RBI.  Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and designated hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) posted two hits (four at bats) and one run scored apiece.  Center fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) went one for three with one RBI.

For Kean, catcher Eddie Jennings (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) was one for two.  Right fielder Dylan Laguna (sr. Edison, NJ/Edison) and first baseman Nick Zucchero (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) both produced one hit in three trips to the plate.  Center fielder Shane Alvarez (so. Franklin, NJ/St. Joseph (Metuchen)) contributed with one hit (four at bats).

Rowan went ahead, 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning.  McMenamin led off with a single through the right side.  He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen).  With two outs, Kreiger ripped a single to left center field and McMenamin came home.  The Profs added one run in the third.  Magliaro hit a two out single up the middle.  Turano drove him in with a double to left center field.

Rowan travels to New Jersey City University for a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 21 at 11:30 a.m.
