Montclair State Sweeps Rowan, 3-0 And 3-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Montclair State University baseball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader against Rowan University on Saturday.  The Red Hawks won both games, 3-0.

Montclair State improves to 18-10 overall and 8-2 in the conference.  Rowan has a 19-11 record with a 4-6 NJAC mark.  The Profs are ranked 16th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and 22nd in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Polls. 

In the first game, left-hander Sean Hille (sr. Edison, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Metuchen)) pitched a complete game.  He (7-2) scattered four hits and struck out six hitters.  Right-hander Steven Melchiorre (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) took the loss.  He (3-1) allowed three runs, two earned on six hits in eight innings.

First baseman Jason Chesterman (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) led the Red Hawks with two hits (two at bats) and one RBI.  Designated hitter Kevin Bond (sr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) went two for five with one run scored.  Catcher Scott Glozzy (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) produced one RBI and one run scored.  Center fielder Mickey McGraw (sr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) picked up one RBI, while third baseman Stephen Nappe (jr. Edison, NJ/Edison) scored once.

For the Profs, designated hitter Casey Grimes (fr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) was one for four with a double.  Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) , second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) and third baseman Danny Lang (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) all registered one hit in three trips to the plate.

Montclair State went ahead, 1-0 in the top of the second inning.  Glozzy reached first on an error.  Chesterman was hit by a pitch and right fielder Timothy Byron (so. East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) walked to load the bases.  With two outs, McGraw was hit by a pitch and Glozzy came home.  The Red Hawks added two runs in the third.  Bond led off with a single.  Nappe was hit by a pitch.  The runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt.  Bond scored on a ground out by Glozzy.  Chesterman followed with a base hit through the left side knocking in Nappe.

In the nightcap, lefty Dylan Papa (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) went the distance for the win.  He (1-1) only gave up five hits.  Left-hander Curtis Arsi (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) suffered the loss.  He (1-2) threw seven innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits.  Arsi recorded 10 strikeouts.

Bond compiled one hit (four at bats), two RBIs and a home run.  Glozzy added two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double.  Right fielder Anthony Bowens (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) contributed with one RBI and McGraw scored once.  For Rowan, Winkler collected two hits in four at bats.  Designated hitter Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and Lang each had a double.

In the second inning, Glozzy hit a one out double to right field.  He advanced to third on Chesterman’s single.  Bowen’s sacrifice fly to right field plated Glozzy.  Bond ripped a two-run homer over the left field fence in the sixth.

Rowan hosts Elizabethtown College in a nonconference contest on Tuesday, April 17 at 4 p.m.
