Rowan Defeats Richard Stockton, 4-2

GALLOWAY, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Richard Stockton College, 4-2 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday afternoon.

The Profs are 19-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference.  The Ospreys have a 16-11 record with a 4-4 NJAC mark.  Rowan is ranked 16th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and 22nd in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Polls. 

Right-hander Mike Behar (jr. Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) pitched seven innings for the win.  He (4-0) allowed two unearned runs on seven hits.  Righty/shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) threw one scoreless inning for his first save.  Right-hander Gage Mick (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) took the loss.  He (3-2) allowed four earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings.

Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) went three for five with one RBI.  Center fielder Scott Bruno (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) totaled two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.  First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) tallied one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Catcher C.J. Szymczak (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) added two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.  Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) was two for five with one run scored and a double.

For Richard Stockton, shortstop Shawn Kessler (jr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) produced two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Designated hitter Marc Asta (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) scored one run.  Center fielder Mike Bush (so. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) registered two hits in four trips to the plate.

Rowan took a 1-0 lead in the third inning.  Bruno led off with a single to left center field.  He advanced to third on a sacrifice hit by Magliaro.  Winkler followed with a single up the middle and Bruno came home.  Both teams recorded two runs in the fourth inning.  In the top half, Kelly walked and Szymczak singled to left field.  They advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade).  With two outs, Bruno singled allowing Szymczak and Kelly to score.  Kessler’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning drove in Asta.  Kessler crossed the plate on an error.

The Profs’ final run came in the fifth.  Hill singled to left field.  He advanced to third on a double down the left field line by designated hitter Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan).  Hill scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelly.

Rowan hosts Montclair State University in a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 11:30 a.m.
