Richard Stockton Edges Rowan, 7-6 In 10 Innings

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Richard Stockton College baseball team defeated Rowan University, 7-6 in 10 innings in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday afternoon.

The score was tied, 6-6 after the ninth inning.  In the top of the 10th, shortstop Mark Jankowski (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) led off with a walk.  He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  With one out, pinch hitter Erik Danser (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) singled through the left side of the infield and Jankowski scored the game-winning run.

The Opreys improve to 16-10 overall and 4-3 in the conference.  The Profs have an 18-9 record with a 3-4 NJAC mark.  Rowan is ranked 16th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and 22nd in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Polls. 

Left-hander Adam Warburton (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) pitched four innings in relief for the win.  He (2-0) scattered four hits and allowed one unearned run.  Lefty Kyle Brown (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) took the loss.  He (2-1) surrendered one earned run in one inning.

Opreys’ first baseman Mike Wasco (sr. Riverside, NJ/Riverside) went two for four with two RBIs and one run scored.  Designated hitter Marc Asta (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) posted two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and a triple.  Right fielder Dan McGuckin (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) added one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Third baseman Travis Marra (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and Danser both tallied one hit and one RBI.  Center fielder Mike Bush (so. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) scored three runs, while left fielder Barry Larro (jr. Cedarville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) and Jankowski each crossed the plate once.

For Rowan, catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was four for five with two RBIs.  Left fielder Eric Perez (so. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) contributed with three hits (five at bats) and one run scored.  Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) compiled one hit (two at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double.  Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and three runs scored.  Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) and first baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) produced one hit (four at bats) and one RBI apiece.  Third baseman Danny Lang (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored one run.

Richard Stockton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Larro walked and moved to second on a ground out.  He came home on McGuckin’s single to center field.  The Ospreys added one run in the top of the third.  Bush reached base on an error.  He stole second and third.  Wasco knocked in Bush with a single to right field.  In the bottom half, the Profs went ahead, 3-2.  Perez singled and Winkler walked.  They moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.).  McMenamin followed with a double to left center field, plating Winkler and Perez.  Hill hit an infield single to third base allowing McMenamin to score.

Both teams picked up one run in the fifth inning.  Wasco drove in Bush with a single in the top half.  Turano’s RBI single allowed Winkler to come home.  Richard Stockton went up, 6-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh.  Wasco and Bush crossed the plate on Asta’s single to right field.  Marra followed with a RBI single that brought in McGuckin.  Rowan cut the deficit to one (6-5) in the bottom half.  Turano singled in Winkler, who got on with a base hit.

The Profs tied the score, 6-6 in the ninth.  Lang reached base on an error.  Turano singled and Lange moved to second.  Hill got on with a fielder’s choice and the bases were loaded.  With one out, Kelly drew a walk and Lang scored.

The two teams meet again on Friday, April 13 in Galloway, NJ at 3:30 p.m.
