Rowan Defeats Widener, 11-4

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Widener University, 11-4 in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon.

The Profs improve to 18-8 overall.  Rowan is ranked 16th in this week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and 22nd in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Polls.  The Pride has a 17-12 record.

Right-hander Bobby Kruse (fr. Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) earned his first win of the season.  Kruse (1-0) allowed one earned run and struck out three batters in two innings.  It was predetermined that the Profs would platoon their pitchers.  Righty Robert Barth took the loss.  Barth (2-2) surrendered six earned runs on six hits in two innings.

Rowan designated hitter Casey Grimes (fr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) went two for three with three runs scored and one RBI.  Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) produced three hits (four at bats), three runs scored and a double.  Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) was two for five with one RBI, one run scored and two doubles.  Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added one hit (four at bats) and two RBIs.  Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) chipped in with one hit (five at bats) and one run scored. 

First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) tallied one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) was one for four with one RBI and one run scored.  Left fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) compiled one hit (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.  Center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) drove in two runs.

For Widener, right fielder Brendan O’Brien posted one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored.  Catcher Sean Saverio totaled one hit in five at bats, one RBI and one run scored.  First baseman Bill Hollingsworth contributed with one hit (five at bats) and one RBI.  Second baseman Kyle Summers scored once.

Both teams recorded one run in the first inning.  In the top half, O’Brien walked and stole second.  He advanced to third on a ground out and came home on a wild pitch.  In the bottom of the inning, Magliaro doubled to right field.  Benak followed with a single down the right field line and Magliaro crossed the plate. 

The Profs added one run in the second and four in the third.  Kreiger’s single knocked in Grimes in the second.  In the third, Grimes drew a bases loaded walk and Hill scored.  Colarte was hit by a pitch, allowing Turano to come in.  Winkler’s single up the middle drove in Kelly.  Rowan tallied two runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-1.  Grimes walked and later scored on an error.  Magliaro plated Winkler with a double down the left field line.  In the sixth, Kelly picked up a RBI single. 

The Pride got three runs in the top of the seventh to make the score, 9-3.  Summer reached base on an error and crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice with Saverio at bat.  With the bases loaded, Hollingsworth singled in O’Brien.  Saverio came home on third baseman Dennis Hocker’s ground out.  In the bottom half, Benak’s sacrifice fly allowed Kreiger to score.  The Profs tacked on one run in the eighth.  Turano singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Grimes’ single advanced Turano to third.  Colarte followed with a sacrifice fly to center field and Turano scored.
