GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with William Paterson University on Sunday. The Profs won the first game, 9-8 and the Pioneers took the second, 6-1.
Rowan has a 15-5 record, while William Paterson is 14-5. It was the conference opener for both teams. The Profs were ranked 11th in last week’s D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll and 14th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll.
The first game was tied 8-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs, catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) singled through the left side and went to second on a wild pitch. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) drove Turano in with a single to right field.
Right-hander Ryan Peterson (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) was the winning pitcher in relief. He (3-1) tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Righty Tom Gaccione (fr. Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley Reg.) took the loss. He (1-2) gave up one run on four hits in 1.1 innings.
Turano went four for six with three runs scored, one RBI and a double. Kelly posted two hits (four at bats), three RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) totaled three hits (five at bats), two RBIs and two runs scored. Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) produced two hits (five at bats) and one run scored. Shortstop Mark Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) had a double and scored once. Center fielder Scott Bruno (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) and second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) both registered one hit and one RBI. Pinch hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) drove in one run.
For William Paterson, first baseman Jack Montanile (sr. Weehawken, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was three for five with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Right fielder Rob Somers (sr. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.) collected two hits (four at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a double. Designated hitter Adam Derner (sr. River Edge, NJ/River Dell Reg.) compiled two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder A.J. Flores (so. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) recorded two hits (four at bats) and three runs scored. Shortstop Anthony Dorio (sr. Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) went one for four with one RBI, while center fielder Ryan Gibbons (jr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) scored once.
Rowan scored one run in the third inning. Benak singled and Turano knocked him in with a base hit. The Pioneers tied the game (1-1) with one run in the fourth. Montanile singled through the right side and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Somers. William Paterson added one run in the sixth and seventh innings for a 3-1 advantage. In the sixth, Flores walked and came home on an error. Somers crossed the plate on Dorio’s RBI single in the seventh. Rowan pulled even (3-3) with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kelly ripped a single to left field bringing Turano and Hill home.
William Paterson pulled ahead, 6-3 in the top of the eighth. With one out, Flores and Montanile had back-to-back singles. Derner’s single allowed Flores to score. Somers knocked in Derner and Montanile with a single to center field. The Profs took an 8-6 lead with five runs in the bottom half. Hill drove in two runs with a single to center field. McMenamin drew a bases loaded walk and Turano came home. Bruno and Winkler each drove in a run with consecutive singles.
In the nightcap, left-hander Tim O’Shea (jr. Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) pitched a complete game for the win. He (4-0) scattered five hits and surrendered one run. O’Shea registered 11 strikeouts. Lefty Curtis Arsi (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) was the losing pitcher. He (1-1) gave up six runs on six hits in 7.1 innings. Arsi struck out nine batters.
The Pioneers were led by Derner with two hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Catcher Vin Fondacaro (jr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) went three for five with one RBI, one run scored and a double. Second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (so. Wharton, NJ/Morris Hills) added one hit (four at bats) and two RBIs. Montanile contributed with two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Flores had one hit (five at bats) and one run scored. Somers picked up an RBI and third baseman James Lauer (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Pennington Prep) scored once.
For the Profs, Turano hit a solo home run. Catcher C.J. Szymczak (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) collected two hits in three trips to the plate. Magliaro and Winkler chipped in with one hit apiece.
William Paterson scored one run in the second inning. Derner singled to right field and Fondacaro followed with a RBI double to center field. Turano’s solo blast over the left field fence tied the game (1-1) in the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers scored once in the sixth inning. Derner doubled to center field and Flores came home. William Paterson tacked on four runs in the eighth. Montanile singled and went to third on an error. He later scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Ptaszynski ripped a single to center field driving in Fondacaro and Derner. Somers’ sacrifice fly allowed Lauer to cross the plate.
Rowan plays a nonconference game at Wesley College on Tuesday, April 3 at 4 p.m.
