GLASSBORO, NJ – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team beat Rowan University, 14-11 in a nonconference game on Wednesday evening.

The Ducks improve to 5-2.  Stevens is ranked 14th in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association Division III Poll.  The Profs have a 3-5 record.

Attack Michelle Buonacuore (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) led the way with four goals and one assist.  Midfielder Spencer Waybright (jr. West Hartford, CT/Ethel Walker) compiled four goals.  Attacks Jenna Scheibling (sr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and Kara Rafferty (so. Bayshore, NY/Islip) added two goals and two assists apiece.  Attack Andrea Dragoni (fr. Easton, PA/Wilson Area) and midfielder Joey Galligan (jr. Burlingame, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) each found the net once.  Midfielder Amanda Ingersoll (fr. Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W. Baker) picked up one assist.

For Rowan, midfielder Michelle Lubrano (sr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) registered five goals.  Midfielder Jamie Blondina (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) collected three goals and one assist.  Attack Becca Wood (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) contributed with two goals and one assist, while attack Vicky Sucharski (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored once.

Stevens took 33 shots and Rowan had 23.  Ducks’ goalie Meg Collins (jr. Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) made seven saves.  Goalie Kerry Pehnke (sr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) turned away 11 shots in the Profs’ net.

Wood’s unassisted goal at 3:41 in the first period gave Rowan a 1-0 lead.  Stevens answered with goals from Waybright (4:07) and Rafferty (6:07).  Lubrano’s free position goal at 7:13 tied the game (2-2).  The Ducks scored three straight goals to go ahead, 5-2.  Buonacuore recorded one goal (8:01) and Waybright had two (12:12, 13:21).  Wood converted a free position attempt at 16:34 and Lubrano added an unassisted goal at 18:01 to bring the Profs within one (5-4).  Stevens closed out the half with goals by Buonacuore (19:23) and Scheibling (29:35) for a 7-4 advantage at the intermission.

Buonacuore opened the second stanza with her third goal at 32:47.  Lubrano’s free position goal (34:13) and an unassisted goal by Blondina (35:49) cut the deficit to two (8-6).  Stevens tallied five straight goals to pull away, 13-6 with 14 minutes remaining.  Rafferty (36:50), Scheibling (37:01), Buonacuore (43:19), Dragoni (45:20) and Waybright (46:00) all found the net once. 

The Profs fought back with four goals in a row, two each by Lubrano (46:42, 54:49) and Blondina (47:42, 52:15).  Galligan scored on a feed from Rafferty at 57:10 to extend the lead to four (14-10).  Sucharski had the final goal with five seconds left to play and Blondina picked up the assist.

Rowan hosts Cabrini College in a nonconference game on Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
